Opinion: will a plated FP expand like a JSP?

Hey friends ...

I just picked up 500-200gr Xtreme plated FP bullets to play around with and, after I ordered, I got to thinking: these are simply soft lead with a think plating.... they may very well act like a soft point in flesh and expand....

What does everyone think? Does anyone have firsthand experience?

I've done expansion tests on Rainier/Berry's HOLLOWPOINT bullets in 10mm and they expanded VERY nicely... I wonder if these 200gr plinkers I bought might actually expand in tough flesh (not that I expect to use them with so many other better options, but I am still curious).

Just brainstorming. Thanks in advance, all!

I seriously doubt you'll see the big expansion like that of a hollow point.  Most flat point's tend to flatten some the yaw to sort of bend the nose over.  The velocity and twist rate can affect the way the forces act on the bullet shapes.  The depth, internal shape and diameter of a hollow point are what allows for the materials to wedge into the advancing projectile.

In the hollow point the cavity is being hydrolytically wedged open in tissue, gel, water, wet phone books, wet clay...in dry sand/dirt, they still open from a mechanical action, as the sand/dirt fills the void.

Yes, I agree, however i'm not asking if it will mimic a hollow point ... I'm asking how it would compare to a SOFT POINT....

The website said the plated were about as hard as BHN18 which is slightly harder than wheel weight alloy of 12-16.

Interesting ... Well, I'll be sure to do some unscientific tests .... to find out. :)
