I don't know if this is the place to post this or not -
My younger brother in Alaska finely got his brown bear with a bow.

It weighed almost 900lbs , didn't say how many arrows it took?
The last he told me was he carried a G20c for back up - but didn't need it to finish the bear off.

Very Brave !!  Maybe just a little lack of firepower IMO.

He's lived most of his life in alaska, said he's been after that bear for over 3 years - This is the first year he could  hunt from a tree stand - said his was about 20 feet up - brown bears can't climb ( too heavy ).
He reloads his own 10mm, said thats one of the most popular rounds for carry ( he likes the glock - 15rds ) his 41mag only has 6.

Don't sell those arrows short, modern broadheads and the speeds of these newer bows will sink an arrow fast and deep, cutting a bloody hole through and through... :o  Maybe Doug will get to post more info on the arrow placement and if the bear required more than one shot to bring it down.

Congrats to your brother Doug!  ;)

Not only do they penetrate deep, cutting lots of tissue on the way, but the long shaft makes the head a four bladed knife bobbing round on the inside as the target moves after being struck.  Arrows only real limitations are the size of the needed device to deploy them and the limits to their range.

Ok,  that makes more sense to me.  Not that bows or the 10mm is a poor choice for hunting (carry it myself in the woods), except I know bears can move real fast over short distances and nothing worse than a pissed off bear of that size running towards you. ( unless there's 2 )

Closest Ive come to a bear is a 125 lb black bear that didn't back down till  I fired the 12ga at the ground in front of him... that was big enough for me.

Congrats to him !

One of the arrows in the quiver looks to have blood stem to stern indicating it passed through and through.  Also no missing arrows from the quiver either...seems to indicate one arrow kill me!  8)

You might be right Shadow - if it was knowing my brother - he'll mount the arrow too.

Nice bear!

Why was this the first year he could hunt from a tree stand. Did they change the law?

ShadeTreeVTX

Alaska made a change in the law - for what reason, my brother didn't say.
Give the hunter a safe place to sit for his own safety??? ;D

That is a good thing.
I had a black bear circle around behind me once. It's not a good feeling, and is one of the reasons I got into 10mm.

Did he eat the meat? Long ago I hunted and will again at some point for Hogs (and for sure eat it!). This is one of those animals I just wouldn't though. The Bear population and especially a Kodiak Brown Bear is one I would just rather not seek out or try for unless I was in danger. I'm all in favor of thinning out some herds and getting rid of threats, but also in favor of the generations after us being able to see these amazing animals in the wild. Most of the time though, having sampled various types of game I would rather drive over to the grocery store and buy a Flintstone for the grill  ;D

Kodiak Bears and brown bears are two different sub species of the SilverTip Grizzly .
The SilverTips range in Alaska in in the higher regions and is the smallest of the three and eats more berries and smaller game.
The Brown Bear is a coastal and river area bear whos's diet is mostly salmon, which gives the mostly brown color, and alot larger size then the SilverTip.
The Kodiak is from the Kodiak Island on the Aleutian Island chain only, and is a totally isolated species of bear,  whoes diet is mostly Salmon. and is said to be the largest of the three.
I don't know if he will eat the bear he shot or not - but he will bring back the meat for use somewhere, as far as I know its against the law to leave it behind to go to waste and they keep real close eye on stuff like that.
