Has anyone bought a Witness lately ? I was wondering how they were. ?

Patriot

I have a 10mm P Carry. I like it. 2012 model. It doesn't feel as nice in my hand as a regular Witness, but when I'm in the mood to carry something lightweight, it's my go to gun these days. I prefer it over a Glock because I like having a hammer and a safety.

I heard they were having recoil spring issues before ? I was interested in the P-Carry for the same reason and that is to carry. I have big hands and that is one of the reasons I don't like Glock. I wish one of the local dealers had one in stock so I can hold it. Thanks for the info.

I recently picked up a 10mm Witness P with 3.6" barrel from galleryofguns.com for $360 delivered when they were on sale.  I would rather have had the P-Carry, but they're $200 more.  Interestingly, EAA does not show the 10mm Witness P with 3.6" on their website or in their catalog.   Here's everything that came in the box:

Here's a left side view:

And a right side view with the slide back:

This pistol has a large grip.  I don't think that I really have big hands, but it seems to fit my hand well.  The length of the single action trigger pull is just right.  I checked the mag that came with it versus the one that came with my full sized metal framed 10mm.  They are both 14rd mags and are the same except for the floor plates.

I took it to the range with 50rds of 10mm (180gr Zero JHP over 10.0gr AA#7).  The results were rather disappointing.  Accuracy was good, the grip felt good and the sights were easy to see.  Unfortunately, on almost every shot I could feel the slide hesitating while going forward.  Three times the slide locked back while trying to feed a cartridge.  Two of the three times the cartridge actually seemed to be caught between the magazine feed lips.

I found an interesting issue with the outside recoil spring.  I think pictures can do a better job of describing the situation than I can.

I called EAA and they sent me a replacement dual recoil spring set.  It's now installed and looks good.  Now I just have to load up some more 10mm so I can test it again.

Very cool! I don't like dual springs unless it is a captive setup. Is it possible to get a single?

Bret

I agree for precisely the reason you see above.  I've replaced dual recoil spring systems in a few CZ75 Compacts with no ill effects.  Unfortunately, Wolff's website says that their single springs are not compatible with dual spring systems.  I may give it a try anyway.

I never did like the dual springs riding on top each other.  Maybe you could use a flat spring like the one in Glock in the 20 to 22 lbs.

Stay away from 12 round magazine models.  Those magazines are a problem.

Those dual spring things are junk.  Wolff supplies an extra power calibration kit with an 18, 20, & 22# springs and they are a huge improvement over the piss poor stock setup.

I just ordered the calibration pack.  I'll let ya'll know how it works.  Another reason that I'm suspect of their dual spring setup is that they use the same dual springs regardless of the cartridge the pistol is chambered for.  The replacement set that I received didn't even have the poundage indicated.

Has anyone had any luck switching from the duel to a single recoil spring? Also, where can I find a flat bottom firing pin stop for the p carry or know of a reason I shouldn't install it.

Guess this is why I prefer the Semi Compact   8)

Quick 2

My full sized didn't come with a dual recoil spring but being only a 14lb spring I bought a Wolf 18lb and I have to yet have a single hiccup. With the factory spring I ran some Federal FBI lite loads no problems. After I got all my reloading components I loaded up some full house 135gr Noslers and they ran and grouped very well. I have been working up some loads with Accurate #7 and was going to run them through the chronograph and my back that I have needed surgery on for about a year and a half decided that its time. Most days it from the bed to the recliner. Don't know when I will get to get out and work on the loads that I have already have reloaded. Carry ammo is Underwood 155gr or 180gr. I have always liked the look of the CZ-75 and wanted a polymer frame hicap after looking at the makers of the Tanfangilo and not the cheesy EAA who imports them I bought a full sized. I carry a M&P Shield 9mm in my pocket and a Ruger SR9c in a 5.11 PUSH bag and either a full sized M&P 9mm or my full sized Witness 10mm on my hip. The reason I said all of that is to show that I choose what I like. Research on the Witness and the company that makes them is why I bought the Witness. A Browning HI-Power on steroids proven time and time again. People say everyone has there oppions and oppions  are like buttholes everybody has one.  I choose what I like and what has been proven over time.
