I can see gun control moving in quickly. I want to get a reasonable priced AK before it all starts to hit. What are some good makers for the money? Any advantage a 47 over a 74?

They all work and go bang, that's an AK.However, like anything they run up in price with all the attachment, red dots etc.I stick with 7.62.39 rounds, effective and affordable and plenty around.Romanian model is good.Sar 1.You might want to get a Saiga 12 shotgun now before the scare really kicks in.High Cap Mags as well.

The Romanian guns are rough but good due to the original chrome lines barrels they are imported with.  Most AK type rifles being sold in the US today are being built from kits with US non-chrome lined barrels.   If you can find a Romanian Draco AK pistol snag it as they are completely Romanian (no US compliance parts) and are a hoot to shoot.
You better hurry though.  I can almost guarantee there won't be any new gun control measures enacted before the elections (don't want to piss off swing voters) but the paranoia combined with some deadbeat gun dealers scaring buyers (buy it now before they ban 'em all) will drive prices through the roof.   You may already be too late if you are a buyer looking for AR receivers, I don't know of any retailers with lowers in stock.   But that was the situation last week, before the Colorado shooting occurred.

Sorry, but if you waited this close to the election to buy black rifle stuff you only have yourself to blame.
Myself, instead of panic buying (which is what I did after the primaries in the summer of 2008) I'm planning on selling some of my extra stuff and making a few $$$.

Good Luck, let us know what you get.

For me I want to put a red dot or scope on it. Hmmm.... scope or dot?

I am liking the looks of this one:

Hammer forged but don't know about barrel lining. How important is that?

I have to check if it is MD legal with my boss in the A.M.

The nice thing about AKs, other than that they are AKs, is some can be had for very reasonable prices.  The problem is you might filter between a dozen poor examples before finding one worth owning.
Gun Control?  Oh yes, the theory that becoming a victim is somehow morally superior to defending yourself & your family.  Makes perfect sense.

I was surprise to learn that the Polytech AKS has become something of a 'collectable'. I never thought of that happening with AKs.......anyway, finding an older Polytech or Norinco in decent shape could be an option. Just in case you ever need a bayonet. :) I bought the Poly back in the early nineties and know little about current imported versions.

I had someone tell me this is a lot of bang for the buck. Chrome lined and hammer forged barrel too. He said his has been great.

You might also consider the FEG AMD-65 at Bud's:

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/756/products_id/411545173/Rifles/Century+International+Arms+Inc.

They have the original FEG receivers with the mag dimples and the cool folding stock with what appears to be the original chrome lined barrel.  If you want to mount a Red Dot there are many mounting options but a simple railed handguard from a quality maker such as Midwest should cost about $90.

Chinese AKs were mentioned earlier, good luck finding one now.  Those babies were considered junk in the late 1980's by gun snobs who never shot one.  The Chinese Norincos and Polytechs are second only to the Finnish Valmet rifles in quality.  A Chinese AK built in the same factory as the regular military AK series is like a Luxury car compared to the Econobox hatchback of the Romanian AK in quality.   That said, the Econobox still runs fine, it just isn't a Premium car/gun.   I have a Pre-Ban Norinco Sile import type 56S that is a sweet shooter.  Never selling that one.

I've been hunting this very gun now for about a month or so. It has a lot of features for the  money and people are getting 2 moa out of it on a regular basis. Tapco butstock, hogue grip(?), quad rail, G2 trigger, hammer forged/chromed lined barrel, tapco break, akm rear sight and there is (I believe) the addition of internal spacers to do the job of the dimples to keep mag wobble to a minimum. Well, these are the features off of the top of my head that are valuable to me. It's all new parts not peaced together from surp parts. Wonder if it is truly in stock at buds, every popular place I've checked has been out?

When you have hits on target with your feet moving, you're a shooter... all else is target practice.

You know more about it than I do. Does that look like one of the better deals out there? How would a scope or red-dot get mounted on it where you aren't looking from a weird position?
