Also, from my experience and from what I have read, the issues with Glocks and 10mm Auto are typically easily remedied.

Usually:

Shooting standard loads is not a problem.

Shooting nuclear loads in a bone-stock Glock will most likely render your brass useless for future use.

If switching over to an aftermarket barrel (for better support to not render brass useless) also switch to a heavier rsa.

Don't limp-wrist.........  ;D

Other remedies as well, etc............. but typically the 'problem' is ammo.

Nope. I'm trying to see if a more defined pattern of what is or isn't working.

I'm curious too, was this thread another attempt to point out something wrong with Glocks?

I run heavy springs in mine, the "24lb" (not really 24 lb) captured ISMI springs in my 6.6" long slide and with the stock G20 barrel in my G21 slide. Both function perfectly with everything, from mild 40 S&W to nuclear loads, almost 1,000 ft-lb from the long slide.

I do shoot heavy cast bullets through both, but handloads not Underwood.
You left out what Gen. Thanks!

Hey 10mm Fans,

I have a Gen 2 Glock 20 that I got in a trade back in November 2013, it has BKU Serial# that dates as a June 1995 pistol.  I have just now had the time and weather to start playing with it.   I have 260 rounds down range and have had good luck with everything but Underwood 180 TMJ's.  The Gen 2 has digested 100 rounds of Federal American Eagle 180 Grain FMJ, 50 CCI Blazer 200 Grain TMJ, and 20 rounds each of Corbon 165 Grain JHP Buffalo Bore 155 Grain Tac-x, with no failures of any kind.

But out of 70 rounds of Underwood 180 TMJ, I had 47 FTF's.   The brass ejection was also sporadic as to direction and distance, but none were Smiled.  I have run the stock RSA ( 2 different Factory New RSA's) and an uncaptured 22 lb Wolff Spring on a
Zev-Tek Stainless Steel Guide Rod.   It made no practical difference in the failure rate.    The Underwood and Buffalo Bore also shot about 3" left of POA, while everything else shot to POA at 15 yards.  The Buffalo Bore 155 Tac-x, while functioning perfectly did Smile 17 of the 20 cases pretty badly.  I ran 10 rounds in each RSA configuration.

I actually think that I have some out of spec Underwood ammo.  Overall I'm quite happy with Gen 2 and think it will replace my S&W 28-2 4" as my back country Roscoe.
I have been carrying it in a home built Kydex holster using a Chesty Puller Harness from Simply Rugged (I use the same harness with a Sourdough Pancake for the 28-2).  The Chesty Puller rig works well when riding ATV's or driving buggies or Jeeps. I live in a cabin in the Sequoia National Forest and venture out into the back country a few times a week.

I have returned to the stock RSA and feel it will work as long as I stay moderate with my reloads and only run a few Nuclear rounds, it also makes re-assmebly much easier.  I plan on shooting the remaining 80 Underwood 180 TMJ's to salvage the brass.  I'm also thinking about breaking down the remaining 40 Buffalo Bore 155's and loading back a milder charge of 2400 or AA#9, to save the brass from smiling.  I think they will function well at 1250-1300 fps.

FWIW, I'm 60 years old and have bad hands from an LEO career and I don't seem to enjoy the flash and boom quite as much as I used to ....  :o

QuoteMtnfolk75 writes  But out of 70 rounds of Underwood 180 TMJ, I had 47 FTF's.

Can you please explain the FTF's?  ???
Were the cartridges left in the magazine?  Not picked up by the returning slide?
Did the round not fully chamber?  Slide didn't return to full battery?
Did the round jam on the feed ramp or jam to the left of the feed ramp?
Were there any casings or ejection rims damaged?  You mentioned no smiles...what about bent? gouged? bulged?

Looking at each of these types of failures could help determine cause.  :-\

Shadow,

A little over half were 1/2 chambers jamming on the top of the chamber, by pulling the slide back about 1/2" then riding it forward they would chamber.   The rest were slightly out of battery, requiring a thumb push from the back to chamber completely.   Some of the brass does have small dents about mid case, they did bulge a little more than the AE & Corbon, I didn't save the Blazer to check.  I also noticed that some of the rounds had more felt recoil & a few actually hurt my palm.   I am considering doing a grip reduction and stipple that will fit my hand better.  I have had 2 surgeries on my hand and have some scar tissue in my palm.  I had a Gen 3 Glock 22 reduced and stippled and it was a joy to shoot, unfortunately my cousin talked me out of it during a moment of weakness ...... ;)

Do you think I should just break them down & reload with my know powders like I am considering with the BB ?

Dusty, you could pull them, but if you do, document the powder charges you find.  This is what I do in the pull down sections on this forum.  I take notes, measurements  and pictures as a study of what is inside and out.
Here is a sample of what I document;

Cartridge is from Ammo Manufacture: Winchester Black Talon 200gr STX
Ballistics Information: 10mm Auto
Muzzle Velocity: 980 fps 1000fps
Muzzle Energy: 426 ft. lbs 444 ft. lbs.
Brass Make/Headstamp: Winchester - Nickel
Bullet Make/Weight/Construction/Info; Length 0.6775"/Dia. 0.4000":BlackTalon 200gr STX
HP depth 0.2500" / Inside Dia. 0.1700" tapered / mouth Dia. 0.2800"
Actual weight 200.2 grains   Crimp squeezed bullet to 0.3995"
C.O.A.L.: 1.2510" / 1.2545"
Primer: Nickel color
Case: Diameter 0.4220" Crimp Diameter 0.4215" (Tight) Length 0.9890"
Powder Description/Positive ID/Type/Charge weight ? ?

If you do decide to pull your rounds, I would suggest, that you resize the brass without depriming, re-expand the case necks, the place the powder charge of your choice back inside and seat the bullets to the proper depth, then crimp in separate step to finish.

If you need any help be sure to ask, I'll do what I can to help out... ;D

Gen 3, Wolff 22lb spring and steel guide rod. Underwoods to mid range. All good to go.

4949shooter

Shot some Buffalo Bore 180 grain yesterday. Make no mistake, this stuff is HOT.

The cases were only slightly bulged down by the case head. No smiles, and no pressure signs to mention. As I have stated before, I am fortunate that my Gen 3 Glock barrel is well supported, or..... perhaps all Glocks are coming out this way in the current climate.  :-\

If it eats anything including dirt please share  ;D

Let us know the setup and ammos used.  Thanks!

IMHO, perfect function and eating anything are two different things.  My Kimber Eclipse Custom II, in either the stock configuration or after modification with heavier springs and flat-bottom FPS has never had any issue except with one particular brand of bullet I reloaded which has an unusually wide hollow point; far wider nose than any other .40cal bullet I have seen.  Once I realized the bullets were so odd that I could not eject a loaded round, loaded within standard spec length, without the nose getting caught up on the ejection port, I realized it was the bullets not the gun.

So I say it works perfectly, I'm not going to hold that against the gun, I just save the few I have left (don't know the brand, had them forever) for my 40SW.

Out of the 54 rounds shot I had no failures of any sort, out of a G20 Gen 4

mag360

No failures with doubletap 200gr wfngc ever in either of our glock 20's and gen 3 sf and a gen 4.

The underwood 180 ran perfect in both last time out and the 200gr xtp ran in both.  Two boxes of critical duty went bang as well.

Factory setups on both.

Switching to the 20 or 22lb wolf spring (not sure what weight) and the lonewolf barrel (tight chamber from before 2011 or so) I was getting hangups on the 200gr xtp. It would get jammed halfway in the chamber and sometimes a tap on the back would seat it but usually had to eject mag and try again.  I polished the feedramp, chamber, and the part of the chamber that meets the feedramp and got no hangups hand cycling but will see next time out.  At this point I dont see why I would carry anthing besides the 100% stock setups.  Ill save the fancy barrels and recoil springs for the range to preserve brass for reloading.

ShadeTreeVTX

Both my G20sf gen 3 with 2 different LW barrel a 2port and a 6.6" threaded barrel 20lb spring  and G29 gen3 with a 2port LW barrel and stock spring have performed flawlessly except when I reloaded some PMC brass with 200HC - fp heads - they would not fit the case checker or my LW barrels - worked a whole evening with that brass and loaded up the same brass with 180jacketed fp's and well guess what - they fit now - tore them back down and found out when I miked the PMC brass walls they where thicker than my  S-L brass, other than that, since I've converted almost totally to Powder Coated cast heads - the PMC brass is in the junk barrel, Both my Glocks eat every thing even my Hot loads, no smiles and slightly flattened primers. I'm happy happy with my Tupperware.

PS I will say one thing though - I will not touch a Gen 4 - till they get the bugs out it.

OK,  So I got 20 of the BB 155 Tac-x's and 5 of the Underwood 180 TMJ's pulled down this afternoon.   I'm a little under the weather today and Snow is forecast for tomorrow and Saturday, so I will finish the pulldowns later.   Anyway, here is what I got using an RCBS Kinetic Bollet Puller and an Ohaus 505 Balance Beam Scale.

The Buffalo Bore 155 Tac-x:

Brass Case:  Head Stamp - A USA 10mm Auto ( Appears New )
Primer: Silver Large Pistol
Bullet: Barnes 155 Tac-x ( Copper/ Lead Free HP )
Muzzle Velocity from BB Web Site -  1425 FPS from stock G20
Powder Charge: I weighed 5 random during the pulldown, finding charges of 11.3, 11.2, 11.2, 11.2 & 11.2 grains of an unknown powder that was so compressed it looked like a pellet.

The Underwood 180 TMJ:

Brass Case:  Head Stamp - Underwood 10mm ( Appears New )
Primer- Silver Large Pistol
Bullet - 180 Grain Truncated Cone with a dished base ( Appears similar to the Xtreme HPCB )
Muzzle Velocity from Underwood Web Site - 1300 FPS
Powder Charge: All 5 weighed 14.4 Grains, Unknown Powder ( Fine Texture & didn't appear
       to have been Compressed )

I tried attaching a picture and found the file was too large .....  :-[
