Anyone use Power Pistol?

I loaded up some test loads of Power Pistol from 7.2-7.6 grains with an Xtreme 180gr plated hollow point for my G29. They sucked to say the least. They chronographed from 313-431 fps, if my chrono was accurate. All shots before and after the 10mm loads seemed to chrono correctly. Shots were all over the place and keyholed like crazy and also some of the brass got caught in the slide on ejection. I think I must have been much too low on the powder charge but was going by one of my reloading books.
I used the Power Pistol at 6.6 grains under an Xtreme 230 RN plated bullet in my G30S .45ACP and it was very accurate at 12 yds.
What do y'all think?

Power Pistol is a great powder for 10mm and those loads should have read much higher...
Alliant shows 8.7 grains under a 180gr lead alloy 1,235 FPS 34,700 PSI.

My light load for 10mm   06/27/09 S&W 1006 5"
156 grain Cast Devastators HP  COAL 1.255"
Power Pistol 7.2 grains
Winchester LP primers
Velocity 1125 fps

It's quite possibly my favorite 10mm powder.

I'm running more than 2 grains more than your loads behind jacketed 180g bullets.

I always loved Power Pistol ... I used 8.6gr in any jacketed or plated 180gr pill, getting 1200 or so from a 4.6" barrel and 1255-1265 from a 6" barrel.  Good stuff... very accurate, good power.

Maybe I need to bump up to around 8.0-8.4 and see how they perform.
I'm just trying some different powders that I have on hand. I like the HS6 but don't have much of that left.
I have a good supply of Bullseye that I'm using for .45acp but I really like the Power Pistol for that one also.

Sounds like you've got something else wrong with that load. Undersized bullets? Damp cases? Bad powder or primers?

Power pistol is a great powder for most of the major pistol rounds. I really like it for 45 ACP +P 200gr loads. In the 10mm the burn rate is just a little too fast for max velocity, falling 50-100 fps behind a couple other powders like Blue Dot and AA9, but it is still a good choice. It works fine for mid-range loads too, so I don't think your loads should have performed like that, if all was as it should be.

Edit - just a thought, there's a good chance those plated bullets just don't work well with your stock Glock barrel. They may be too small for the bore, and/or too soft to grip the rifling. Most plated bullets can't handle being pushed too fast either (1,000 fps or so).

I've used the same bullet with Titegroup and HS6 loaded to around 950-1000 fps and it works great. Will try to upload a pic if I can.
Looks like they start to look better at 7.6 grains, at least not tumbling. May try to increase charge.
I really like the Power Pistol with the .45acp, has a nice tight group.

This photo is with Titegroup a week earlier at about the same distance, 12 yards, G29.

I use power pistol but only for 125-135 grain JHP. I have not tried it for any other loads.ave not had any problems with this powder.

That sounds like your load is reliant on pressure swelling the bullets up to fit the bore. Bullets that fit correctly won't tumble at low velocity, even at 300-400 fps. You may get them to work well enough at higher pressure, but be aware that it's masking another problem. Titegroup, being a much faster powder, reaches max pressure at lower bullet velocity; the higher pressure is probably why it gave you better results.

Honestly, that Titegroup group kinda sucks too. I don't mean any offense by that; I think it's another indication of a problem with those bullets. Are you able to shoot tighter groups with other bullets? That G29 should be capable of putting all the rounds pretty close to touching each other at that distance.

Well, I'm not the best shot in the world and those were freehand. :))
I still have about 5 each of the loads left, so I may shoot them in my G20SF and Lone Wolf barrel.

That's probably worth a try; the LW barrel may (but not necessarily) have a tighter bore.

I think the plated bullets might be skidding across the rifling in your Glock barrel with the lower pressure loads. If you were able to recover one of those, and post some pics, it might show that.
