Decided I've had enough of the liberals and hippies out here in Washington State. Mostly, I'm downright sick of seeing meth heads and junkies everywhere I go. Home invasion robberies, car prowls (I've had my car window smashed twice recently and my stuff stolen from my glove box), and the government and police don't seem to do anything. They even have some anti-gun legislation on the ballot this year. Not sure what direction that is headed, but I'm not taking any chances. I have a good job here, but I figure I can get a job in my line of work (security management) just about anywhere. My girlfriend is originally from Ft. Myers, Florida so we're going to move there so she'll be closer to family when our baby is born. We're leaving June 1st. Going to drive across the country and visit some cool places along the way like the grand canyon, Tombstone Arizona, Vegas, maybe some places in Texas.

Good luck in Florida.  Hopefully you have been there before.

Lots of people love it there.  Personally I can't stand the place.  My Grandfather lived there for many years.  He died last fall, and I was down there a few weeks ago packing up his house and getting it ready for sale.

Best of luck with the move.  Are you driving across the country, or shipping your stuff and flying?

Good for you! I'm right behind you myself for similar reasons.

I've visited a few times. It reminds me of California without the hippies. I like the hot weather and they have good deer hunting.

We are selling the big stuff. Going to buy new furniture after we buy a house using my VA loan. Going to tow my new car with the Jeep and drive across the country. Going to load both cars with the small stuff like clothes and keepsakes but that's it. And of course my guns and reloading equipment.

I lived in Venice for about 5 years. The Atlantic Coast is nicer IMO.

I like California. I was born there and lived there most of my life. But I can't stand the gun laws. Washington is slowly turning into a California clone. My biggest reason for wanting to move is the cost of living. 3bed 2bath houses are $60-$100 grand in Florida. That would cost 3-4 times more where I live now. If I use my VA loan in my current city, my house payment would be $1,400 a month. In Florida, I'm looking at around $500. That's a huge difference.

The thing about Florida, like Louisiana, is the Hurricane threats.  However the criminal evil is everywhere, but some areas are more saturated than others.  Good luck getting the move sorted out, safe travels!

Wish you all the best for you and the family!  :D

My daughter and son in law lived in North Ft Meyers for four years and the area around them was turning into what you described where your at now, that was about twelve years ago and I can't imagine it's gotten better. We vacationed in Destin a few times and it was one of the nicest places in Florida we stayed, it's the the Emerald Coast area.
You say you like the heat so that only leaves the bugs (especially the Fire Ants), snakes, gators, hurricanes, hoards of tourists and slow moving traffic in peak season to deal with.  ;D

Seriously though, Best of luck with the relocation.

Welcome to Florida Grim Reaper! Nice gun laws here, or should I say lack thereof. I'm in Casselbery, just north of Orlando. I've lived here on and off since I was a kid. If you are up this way, let me know & I'll take you to the range on me! Least I could do for you since you created this great website.

Lots of good hog hunting in Fl as well as the deer. Only place with more hogs is Texas & we probably have more per square mile than they do. And, you can use your 10mm's.

Good luck with the move, Reaper. I with I could get out of this Kommie state.

I have been to the grand canyon twice. Once on a raft. The other time via car and foot. If you are into hiking the Bright Angel Trail is an experience.

Last year the boss and I were at the point of getting out of the populated area. Honestly western NY isnt as liberal as the eastern part of the state. Especially, around the cities, we bought 14 acres in the middle of nowhere. One acre pond, its in rifle hunting area, I can take a 2 minute walk and am in my stand. We talked about going to PA. I have family all over southern PA., but starting over at our age wouldnt work, so we moved. Happy as a hog in excrement.

Best of luck to you.   ;)  I love seeing right-minded folks move to a swing state.

Good Luck my man. Lived in Clearwater in mid 80's for awhile. Best thing I did was getting out of S.E Pa into Central Pa.

GR,   Wow I didn't know WS was like that.

I lived in SW Florida just north of where you are going to be moving.  I lived in Port Charlotte for 4 years.  FM is well like the other member said lots and LOTS of young kids getting drunk and wild.  But go around that area and you will find a nice place.  I worked in Punta Gorda  and Charlotte Regional Medical Center.  Punta Gorda is Very nice also.  Just look around and Don't rush your purchase on FM look in a 50 mile circle of FM and see for your selves.  The Fishing is INSANE as I had a 21 foot Release Back country Flats boat and was incredible.  Boca Grande Pass is the BOMB. May and June were my favorite months chasing those Tarpon.  Greatest game fish even IMHO.   Weather not as bad as most say but I LOVE THE WEST COAST. Hate the east coast as its like NJ AND NY in FL.  My sister is on the east coast and I hate visiting her when I lived there.

Well best of luck to you and let me know if you have any more questions.
