Wolff Gun Springs

Today I took delivery of the Wolff Gun Springs "steel non-captive recoil rod" and the "22lb" & "24lb" recoil springs for the Glock 20SF.
One thing I noticed with this set of springs, is they have one end which is wound to a smaller diameter.

I can see this to be an issue if installed backwards.  The larger end of the spring, is the size of the recessed area inside the front of the slide.  According to Wolff's information as to the springs orientation, is for the larger open end toward the muzzle.  Judging from the design of the spring the small end seems to be so that it holds the spring center of the rod, and to not allow it to jump over the end of the recoil rod to the rear.

I want to conduct a test of actual pressure it takes to open and unlock with the different springs and different spring rates.  Looking to see if the non-captive setup applies more pressure to maintain more positive lockup.  It has been my belief that this is the case.  Next time out I'll test the two springs in real world ammo testing...

Well I bought the digital fish scale to attempt to measure the point at which the slide starts to move with the factory spring vs. the Wolff Gun Springs 22lb.  Not very accurate but the results did repeat and may have to refine the setup to gain better results...Gun is set so the striker is pre-cocked

Glock 20Sf Factory spring test
It takes 5lb 3oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 18lb 0oz at lock open

Glock 20SF spring test Wolff Gun Springs 22lb RSA installed
It takes 6lb 4oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 22lb 9oz at lock open

Glock 20SF spring test Wolff Gun Springs 24lb RSA installed (added 7/12/14)
It takes 7lb 6oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 24lb 1oz at lock open

Slightly over a pound difference 1lb 1oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Slightly over a 2 pound difference 2lb 9oz at lock open

Glock 29 spring test Wolff Gun Springs 21lb RSA installed (updated 7/12/14)
It takes 6lb 4oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 21lb 3oz at lock open

Glock 29 spring test Wolff Gun Springs 23lb RSA installed
It takes 7lb 1oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 23lb 5oz at lock open

Glock 29 Factory spring test
It takes 4lb oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 16lb 10oz at lock open

Pics would be helpful, Shadow.

Shooter, I used a small "C" clamp padded as not to mar the slide at the serrations so I could hook the scale to the clamp and pull straight back on the slide, as I pulled pressure on the slide I was noting the reading at which the slide started to move out of battery.  This was performed several times looking for repeatable readings.

The second part was to put pressure on the slide to the point it locked open on the slide stop for the max spring pressure rate at that point.

Gotcha.

I more or less meant pictures of the spring where it meets with the front of the slide.

All good though. Interested to hear more on the slide lock pressure weight!

Hey Shadow - Where did you get your Wolff set up from - I need to bump up my spring pressure on my 20sf 6.60" hunting set up for the 200 and 220gr loads I'm working on. I only have a 20lb in there now and I need a butterfly net to catch up with the brass now.

Yes, I have their two piece recoil rod for the G-29 and 21 lb spring set in mine and the 23 lb spring set is too stout for anything but testing!   :o

Added new info in the second post to include the 24lb spring for the G-20SF and the Glock 29 with factory captive and Wolff 21lb and 23 lb setups. ;D

Shadow - what is the diameter of the guide rod on your Wolff G-20sf setup?  Trying to determine if I can use Wolff springs on my Lone wolf guide rod in my gen 4 (with the lone wolf gen 4 adapter).

Also toying with the idea of getting a Wolff guide rod. I think the Wolff guide rod is thicker than the Lone Wolf. I would have to enlarge the hole in my Lone Wolf Gen 4 adapter to make it work. Nothing a drill bit a a little polish job couldn't fix.

Too many Wolff and Wolf's in this post. Getting confused myself.  :D

I will post the diameter of my lone wolf guide rod later.  My calipers are lent out at the moment.

The_Shadow

The Wolff Gun Springs rod diameter is 0.2710"  and length 3.3340",  the spring is 0.4235" wit one end at 0.3770"

BTW my followers have a # 2 on them.

Thanks Shadow!  Much appreciated. Can I ask you one more question..... What is the inside diameter of the opening in the slide the the guide rode sits in?  I am assuming it is slightly larger than .271 inches. I am trying to determine how much larger I need to make my adapter ring opening.

The_Shadow

It looks like the inside diameter of the guide rod opening of the slide of the G-20SF is 0.2775" Max.
