I have 2000 Zero 165 GR. JHP bullets , that I picked up at what I think was a good price . ($253.) with free shipping .  I would like to know is there a big difference between the Zero 165 GR. JHP , and the Speer GD HP . ?

I haven't used the Zero 165gr. 40 cal stuff, They should work really well even at 10mm velocities!  There may be some jacket separation depending what it encounters...

Most of what I use is their 0.356" 121 JHP has been a good performer in 357Sig and 9x25Dillon!
I like their products, i only wish they has stuff is stock to buy!  :(

Shadow , Thank you for the reply .

This is where I got them .

It looks like they don't have any 40 cal.  at the moment .

Shadow , Have you used any powder coated cast bullets ?

A Guy my Son works with makes powder coated cast bullets , and he says they work great .   He loads them in 9mm, 38 sp.,357 mag., 40 S&W , and 44 mag .  He told me he loads the 357 , and 44 mag. really hot , and has no leading at all .

He said he would give me some powder coated 40 cal . bullets to try in my 10mm . I think I'm going to give it a shot .

There was some discussion on the powder coated bullets here and other forums, they were several application methods being used.  The type powder paints used is what is concerns me and some others...there was some talk of powdered paint that was causing abnormal wear as used. :(

I haven't tested it yet for myself, but am still studying.  I did cast some bullets fresh the other day, now I have to find which powdered paint I will use to coat them. :-\

It has been fast enough and cheap enough to just shoot them as sized and lubed over the years.

If you size , and lube you would still need to gas check them to go hot wouldn't you , or can you get away without the gas check ? I have shot a lot of my own cast bullets , but I never loaded them hot .

The_Shadow

I have shot 125 grain casted stuff no gas checks at 1700+ in the 9x25Dillon barrels and 1400 fps in the 357Sig barrel, 156 grain @ 1400 fps from the 10mm and 175 grain 1350 fps without any or much leading.

I do have some gas check molds to include pistols and rifles that allow great performance.

But step back in history, and it didn't take the high speed bullets like we see to today to be effective...so most are used at reasonable loadings for economy and less wear and tear guns and brass.  :D

Big difference in terminal performance. The Gold Dot is WAY tougher.

Bear in mind that Gold Dot was going 230 fps faster and it still held together.

Raggedyman , Thank you very much for your help , and the very informative videos .    The Gold Dot does look like very impressive SD round .

You're very welcome, thanks for watching.

Don't get me wrong, I believe that if you shot a person with one of those Zero bullets at around 1,300 fps, give or take, they would have a REALLY. Bad. Day. Fragmentation is normally not desirable in defensive handgun ammo but even after fragging all to hell, these bullets delivered a good sized bullet past the 12" mark.
