I don't have kids of my own, but nieces and nephews that grew up in my lap as I showed them things of interest on the computer.  The wife has her own computer so as to allow her to share in the fun!  It seems like I am the go to guy for answers with the issues as well.

You mention the 56K Modem, my first computer (AMD 386DX 40Mhz) I built started life with a 14.4 modem, you could plug in a website, let it start to load, go fix yourself a sandwich and drink, come back and watch the page load up while you eat!

Now these same nieces and nephews stroll up to me and say can I use your computer...what makes friday any different?  LOL
