A 13-year-old boy was shot dead by police in California seconds after he was seen carrying what they thought was an assault rifle, only to learn afterwards that the gun was a plastic replica.

A similar incident happened here about two years ago where a guy wanted death by COP. He pulled a pistol (fake) and was shot and killed:

And another last year:

When told to put something down... PUT IT DOWN. It's extremely hard IMO to decipher what is real or fake today!

The last news report I read said it was a pellet gun, not a toy ... I don't know which reports are accurate.  And the report I read also said that the other cop didn't fire, so all 8 must have come from that one cop.  I would think that a pause for an assessment somewhere before the 8th round would have been a good idea ... but I wasn't there ... hard to second-guess someone when you didn't experience what they experienced.

It was airsoft replica of an ak. 8 rounds from one cop.

Exactly!
This situation is exactly like 1994 and 2009.  Shooters responded emotionally to some threat that did not exist.  Some persons who wanted to appear "in the know" or "connected" used the internet forums to repeat these "sky is falling" rumors over and over until people believed i

Here is one for you:

Maybe you could have done better Steve, because you have ESP that can determine a pellet gun from a real gun pointed at you.

For the rest of us mere mortals, we have to make life and death decisions in split seconds. Then we will be criticized and second guessed for the rest or our lives for the split second decision someone else forced us to make.

Cheers.

There's an emerging pattern with this particular OP.  He may be looking for a different forum.  This isn't THR.  People aren't vitriolic here.

A couple of things come to mind here.  First the boy was wearing the feared "Hoodie" which obviously labeled him a threat to mankind (remember Trayvon Martin) so we know he had to be guilty of something.  The second thing is a reminder of how I was excused from jury duty (capitol case) once when I answered a question about how I viewed defense lawyers.  My answer was "pond scum."  The judge questioned me about the answer and I told him that I found it problematic that lawyers were able to spend weeks and months questioning the actions of an officer who had to make a life or death decision is seconds.  Unless you've been there (I got close a couple of times) then it's a lot of what if, maybe.

Sorry but I had to look that one up  ;D

No, sir.  I'm just suggesting that you are in the wrong place.  There are plenty of gun forums that welcome bigoted cop bashing and other conspiracy-laden silliness.  However, this is a nice forum with nice folks who only disagree in a very agreeable manner.

I won't bother trying to educate you as some nice folks have here, because people like you are truly lost.  I send you my best thoughts and prayers.

Ha!  I did, too.  I learned it on a gun forum.  It just doesn't fit here.   ;D

People like me are lost?  This whole Country is lost because of cops like this.

But what did police find after they shut down the streets for blocks around Mark Witaschek's Georgetown home, broke down a bathroom door with a battering ram and pulled his 16-year-old son out of the shower naked, pointed guns at the heads of Witaschek and his girlfriend, handcuffed them and then "tossed the place" for two hours?

These kinds of Gestapo tactics are happening all across America and when "People like me" comment on them, bitch about them and post them on forums for others to see we are "Cop Bashing".

When the truth about Obama is told, you are a Racist, when the truth about cops and their Gestapo tactics is told you are a "Cop Basher".  Best we just sit back, shut up and let Obama run rampant in his quest to destroy the Constitution and the cops do whatever they wish and terrorize whom ever they wish for fear of being called a Racist or a Cop Basher.

OK, got it, thanks.

I look at them as case by case and relate it to my own personal thought process in that situation. Keeps me sane  :D

In this case why are the parents off the hook? This child shouldn't have left the home with something looking like that given all that has happened in recent years. They should IMO have also engrained how you proceed with law enforcement when they are given instructions. That right there squashes 99% of things getting out of hand.

It's a real crazy World out there and you couldn't pay me to be a LEO. With the things we have seen I would be on the edge all the time! Wish I had more details on how far they were away, etc... when this happened to see if a Tazer was an option. You have seconds to make a decision if it were a real rifle and the distance may have been too great after giving commands.
