Underwood Ammo in a STI Perfect 10

I have a Perfect 10, just picked it up first of the month.  I also have a 10mm Witness that is mostly a single shot.
I used Underwood in the EAA 200gr down to 155gr.  Can I shoot the Underwood in my STI?  My LGS owner likes the 10mm so he keeps several different brands on the shelf, just not as hard hitting as the Underwood, when he can get them.  I have used the 200 gr Underwood on coyotes and like how they drop.  Don't want to hurt the STI but do want to shoot the most power I can.  I want to use it for hogs.  Everyone I know shoot the Glock or EAA with 2 guys shooting a S&W 1006.  No one is shooting any 1911.

warren, welcome to the forum and congrats on the STI 10mm!  ;)   Underwood is a great ammo.  Do you handload?  Handloading does provide some benefits to keeping the 10's feed with everything from "mild to wild"  :o

I started out with the S&W 1006 it has been a tank and it still serves me well to this day. ;D

Best regards!

I have a STI 10MM .
IMHO , I would NOT shoot UW ammo in my STI 10. I have heard of to many ACCIDENTS with UW ammo. You milage may vary.

Sean based on your experience, I suppose the STI 10 has a lack of chamber support?  ???
If that's the case, it sort of sucks...however Underwood does make the lower powdered stuff tailored for the Delta Elite 1911 line.

I would be really surprised if the STI gun doesn't have a ramped fully supported chamber.

Based on Sean's added statement about "accidents with UW ammo" I think is concern is more with predictability of the ammo than the ability of the gun to handle full power 10mm.

I didn't realize STI pistols were that bad for support.  Anyone have a picture? You can step down a notch to another MFG if you don't reload.  A Double Tap offering may fit the platform nicely.

The barrel is listed as a ramped barrel with a fully supported chamber.  I have put 5 rounds of Underwood 10mm Auto 200 Grain XTP Jacketed Hollow Point.  The case looked like the EAA had shot it.  2 had the primers gone and the other 3 had flattened primers.  The gun didn't load the next round, the nose was stopped about halfway up the ramp.  Dropping the mag and pushing on the rear of slide the round finished loading.  Don't think I'll use the 200 grain XTP in my STI as I don't like the primers gone or flattened.

That's odd. I have never lost a primer in any of my 10's with any ammo.

Again...I am quite certain the post was not meant to indicate an issue of support with the STI.

It was about risking a $2500.00 pistol on ammo from a MFG which has a reputation of the occasional overcharge.

Primers can back out under high pressure and even pop out, two things can come into play.

The impulse can be so high it can push the primer out of its pocket, usually this will push the casing off the extractor, leaving the spent case in the chamber.

Sometimes the primer/pocket fit can be too loose, sometimes they will stay in other times they can fall out or be pushed out under pressure.  The barrel and slide have to unlock for this to occur.  Ejection timing can affect the situation, as the slide and barrel travel back to start to unlock.

During firing the casing slams back against the breech face, which in higher impulse rounds the primer can flatten, not all primers are equal and certain powders can cause that condition even though the pressures are with in tolerance.

Exactly , but I think they knew that, some folks will not admit UW ammo is a use at your own risk proposition.
I think the blown primers prove that AGAIN.

Will there will be no more Underwood in the STI as the gun has became my favort around the farm.  I'm loaded with Buffalo Bore Heavy 10mm Ammo - 220 gr. Hard Cast - FN (1,200 fps/ME 703 ft. lbs.).  Cases look good, primers all look good and it feeds good.  3 rounds and aim and impact are to same point at 25 yards.  Hope the Buffalo Bore are better than the Underwood for my STI.

One thing about BB , there ammo is usually below stated spec's ,but in a 6" gun you are probably close to 1200 but that is still decent and if it is accurate in your gun you are ready to hunt :P
My STI likes a cast 215 gr WFNGC at 1220 fps, very accurate at 25 yards.
