How in-depth do you go? I have been cleaning on the Redhawk this morning and I get most of it but don't try to get all the black off around the forcing cone. That takes forever and I also don't go to the extreme on the cylinder front-face.

On a deep clean I generally try to get anything I can see in a normal breakdown.  I don't pull the side plate off :D.

I don't clean that often.  Especially a gun that is home or carry defense.  They get cleaned at the range, followed by 10-20 round and a wipe-down, or just before a trip to the range followed by a wipe-down.

Truth be told, you can pretty much label me anal when it comes to gun cleaning.  With me, cylinder faces, front and rear are cleaned immaculately, right along with the forcing cone area and anywhere else.  I'm thinking about buying one of those sonic cleaners just for that type stuff.  I don't know if the hype is real, but those sonic cleaners supposedly do quite a darned fine job that way.  Who knows, maybe if I had one of those sonic cleaners I'ld end up finding other uses for it too.
Gun Control?  Oh yes, the theory that becoming a victim is somehow morally superior to defending yourself & your family.  Makes perfect sense.

I usually clean after each range trip. I average 100 rounds per pistol when I go. Just picked up a Hordady Magnumsonic cleaner and cleaned my GP100 in it for the first time today. I did strip it down so it makes reoiling easier. Normally, I only clean the bore and wipe down everything else. About every 500 or so rounds I take it apart for the more detailed cleaning.

The area around the cone being black IMO doesn't hurt a thing. I try to get most all off the cylinder face and of course get the barrel spotless. First shot fired next time out it will be a filthy mess... the way I look at it.
