10 Round

I just purchased a box of these bullets to reload. I went on their site and downloaded the load data. It is extremely anemic, probably loaded to 40 Cal. Specs under 1100 feet per second I would like to get these into the 1150 range. That is where my gun seems to Just love bullets. Has anybody experimented with these? And maybe give me some of your input.
I have loaded lehighs, one hundred and forty and one hundred and fifty gn in the fifteen hundred feet per second range in the past.
I have A #7, A #9, BE86, CFE PISTOL AND LONGSHOT.
I was thinking maybe hoping, that I could use 200 grain data, at least.
And yes, these do seem to be longer bullets.

Yes the 100% copper bullets are longer for their weight as compared to a lead core & cup style.
.400 diameter, 185 grain Xtreme Penetrator Bullets is shown as being Bullet Length   .755"
For comparison the 200 grain Hornady XTP is 0.6780"
For comparison the 200 grain Speer Gold Dot is 0.6930"
If you were to use BE-86 you might find 8.0 to 8.2 grains about the right velocity you are looking for.

I have shot 200 grain Gold Dots using 8.4 grains at 1235 fps using BE-86

This fits with some of my be86 data for 180gn bullets

They say there are two types of people in this world:
  • Those that can extrapolate from incomplete data

With that in mind, I went looking at Underwood ammo data trying to compare traditional lead/copper JHP to monolithic solids to see how they derate from a velocity perspective.  Here is I could find

Bullet Weight (JHP/Solid)JHP VelocitySolid VelocityVelocity Derate
135/140160015006.25%
155/150150014255.00%

Based in this trend, I would say you would be on the edge of safe around 1250 fps with this bullet with the right powder.  I would probably stop at 1200 fps or if unusual pressure signs developed.  I think BE-86 would get you to 1150, but I would not try to push it to 1200.  I would look to #9, Longshot, #7 and Blue Dot in that order if I was going for 1200 or above.

You probably can't get enough #9 in the case to cause a pressure issue.  If it gets to 1200+ it's a great choice, but it won't be economical due to higher powder volume and higher powder cost per lb.

Longshot and #7 will almost certainly get over 1200 fps, but will probably be over pressure before 1250.

Blut Dot should safely get you to 1150 fps, but 1200 fps would probably be pushing it.

BE-86 is a strange animal.  As pressure goes up it almost feels like it's burn rate profile gets slower, which is the opposite of what you normally expect. It is a very nifty powder, but I don't feel like I have a good handle on how it behaves in these situations to feel comfortable working off-book with it.

im only looking for 1125 to 1150 both the gun and I shoot ok in the range mainly me.

I started off loading really hot rounds but after a certain point dead is dead and paper is thin

10 Round

Ok tomorrow will tell i will post my results or not.
These bullets were a bitch to load. They are extremely long. A#9 is a no go they list 11gn that was a completely compressed load.I couldn't even get the length of the bullet correct i had to go down to 10gn.
I loaded 800x, be86, #7, #9, all were loaded at book or just under their recommendations.
Hope i have fingers to type tomorrow.

BE86 7.7gn   H 1114 L 1078 A 1096  SD 18
800X 7.8gn   H 1024 L 1011 A 1017  SD 7
A #7  9.3gn   H 1005 L 1005 A 1005  SD 0
A #9 10.0gn  H 921   L  858  A 889    SD 32

As far as accuracy 800X With BE86 very close second BE86 very good velocity  with room to load more
I only did 2 rounds each yes I know its not enough but thats what it is #9 is out not enough room for any more powder at 1.255 @ 10.0gn
Shadow if you would like to try send me an address I will send you some to test with.

#7
Primers looked flatter on A #7. All the rest, no change.
Also one of the A #7 would not resize to fit the sizer ?

The_Shadow

Thanks for the load testing as shown!
I think BE-86 is what you will find will get you there.
800X is a great powder for some applications but weighing each charge is needed to be sure.

I hand weigh each and every powder charge anyway!  That way there are no guesses!

I was afraid that might be the result with #9.  With the right bullet it can do amazing things, but it is usually too slow for 10mm.  That is clearly the case here.

10 Round

Well, I have been thinking, I think this 185 penetrator bullet solid copper was originally designed for the 400 legend. That's said Im thinking they adapted it to the ten millimeter because of the .400 size.

I think a better bullet for the 10 mm would be a 170 grain penetrator or defender. This bullet just seats too deep for any useful powder loads and pressure's.

I'm wondering how one would go about cutting the back end off one of these and testing a 170gn bullet.

10 Round

I Tested 8.0 of BE86 av velocity 1136 right where i wanted to be do these primers look flatten

The_Shadow

Those primers are ok and the BE-86 is what I expected with those bullets.

What we see is where the cup starts to push into the Glock striker hole which isn't that bad.  One thing that can happen over time is small bits of primer cup or cup plating and even primer sealers can get blown into the strike channel which could cause light primer strikes.

#13
I take my gun apart fairly often.
I have many channel liners and extra
Firing pins springs, etc.
Everywhere I read were BE 86, it's not good for heavy loads. I'm not seeing what there talking about. I think it's a hell of a good powder. And I think it could be taken even further with that load, but I'm where I wanna be. I'm starting to wonder if 2400 would fit.

The_Shadow

2400 will be too slow, Blue Dot maybe but it hard to beat the BE-86 or Power Pistol for that matter.

Powder Pistol was BE-84 and BE-86 are derived from Bullseye...The grain size is a little bigger that Bullseye.
BE-86 has a flash suppressant added but Powder Pistol did not!

You might be able to use Ram Shot Silhouette powder with was the same exact as Winchester Action Pistol.
