I picked up 1000 HST jacketed hollows points for a really good deal and want to work up a load for my 10mm 1911's, both have 5" barrels. I have been using 6.4 gr of 231 under a 180 gr RN with pretty good results with accuracy. My objective here is more for accuracy over max velocity.

I do have other powders to work with... CFE Pistol, Longshot, Unique, Tight Group. Question here is were do I start, which powder is the best to use? I do not have objectives to pushing the envelope a little, just want to stay away from super max loads. I don't want to beat my pistols up pushing the limits. Just want some tight groups and a true 10mm load. And I do understand that what works in my pistol may not work in another, looking for a good starting point without wasting reloading components.

If you have access to Blue Dot or BE-86, they both make for some accurate mid level loads, especially BD at 10.4 gr under a 180

Dino11, understand that the HST is a slightly longer bullet than most in the same weight.  231 should work well but there are other powders that can also perform quite well!
My question is what velocity would you want to get?

Clean burning and accurate loads can be had,
Power Pistol
BE-86  8.0 - 8.2
Blue Dot  10.2 - 10.4
AA#7 10.2 - 10.6
CFE Pistol  7.0 - 7.4
Auto Comp  7.4 - 7.6

You got some good advice here with both replies. All of the powders suggested by Shadow are WAY BETTER than 231.
My opinion is that 231, HP38 are both for plinking.
Blue Dot and Longshot get my vote first. CFE Pistol and Auto Comp would be my next choices.
I do like CFE due to its versatility in its entire line up.
When it comes to .40SW and 10MM, I tend to run them toward max because I like a spicier load.

Best wishes friend, safe shooting to all.
