Hello
Had some fun this morning working with my G20-SF. A few years ago, I installed a Vortex Viper RD sight and never looked back.
A buddy of mine sent me a bag of Winchester 10mm 175gr SilverTips. He doesn?t shoot 10mm so he had no use for them. He acquired them from some trading he was doing.
Anyway, I was going to see if I could come up with a factory duplication load. Accuracy with the 175gr factory load has always been good in the stock barrel or the KKM SS barrel.

Well, I got started this week with that project and started out trying CFE Pistol, Power Pistol, 3N37, and Longshot with Win WLP primers. Results were rather unspectacular. I was about ready to shelve the idea but, at the last minute I got inspired to try 800-X. I?ve always had good luck with 800-X using Rem 2? primers. It wasn?t considered at first because it?s kind of a pain to work with as you must monitor your charges closely.

So I calculated that 9.3grs should get my where I want to be, around 1200 fps. Well looky there?

The target circles are 4?.
It?s interesting that this factory load lot is loaded with 9.3 grs of some flattened ball powder. The chronograph encountered an error on this string so I didn?t get a complete readout. But the numbers I did see were just over 1200 fps.

I like to check zero on the load I keep in the gun around the house. We are quite a ways out of town in the woods, so wildlife is abundant, including black bears that like to help themselves to the chicken coup or the trash can. It?s a 200 gr hard cast bullet over 9.5grs Blue Dot.

So both loads shoot about the same place. That?s a good deal. There are 50 Win cases waiting to be loaded in the shop.
WHY DO THEY CALL IT COMMON SENSE WHEN IT IS SO UNCOMMON?

In the pull-down documentations we saw some different load charge weights and powders

Some was 13.0 grains
Some were 9.2 grains
Some were 8.6 grains

Winchester data shown for WAP (suppose to be the same as Silhouette)

Targets Nos. 7 and 8;
I shot some 540 and 571 and the results were quite disappointing. Velocity was nowhere near what Win stated and the groups were terrible.
Also shot some Silhouette. Groups were ok but velocity was pretty slow, even with going past recommended charges and carefully measuring case expansion.

Once I started using a chronograph back in the '80s, I began to realize that there was, more often than not, a difference between published velocities and reality.

I'm aware of the various charges found in the Win factory loads. I haven't pulled down very many, but the ones I have were all 9.3grs.
I wonder if this factory powder is anything like the old Win 630 powder that was around back in the '70's... It was on the slow side if I recall.

I do remember the the Older 175 Silver Tips were a bit faster then the later ones....
as shown, there were some changes along the way , esp in powders used.
