Does milling a stainless steel slide for an MOS, weaken it to much? Its for a 10mm long slide I will also be using full power loads with.

Kenk

Hey Roguer,
I wouldn?t think it would be an issue, but I?m sure the resident experts will know more on this

No.  I am confident the engineers at respectable companies that make these cuts have done their homework.

That said, I did a bit of math.  Assuming your slide is Crucible 416R stainless steel, and taking some crude measurements on my G20 SF slide, I come up with about 25,000 lbs of force yield strength in a slide cut to factory dimension in the cross section where the cut would occur.  After the cut, the strength is reduced to about 22,000 lbs, assuming a cut depth of 1.125".  This is reduction in strength of 12.7%.  Given the magnitude of the forces involved I would not be concerned at all.

I'm looking at the Lone Wolf slide 20L type for a polymer 80.

Thanks, I was wondering if leave it non MOS or not.

Kenk

For me personally, I have taken my 10mm whitetails at 25 yards or less with irons. If they are much further, I grab my slug gun, but that just me

The 17-4 stainless used in that slide is 2-3 times as strong as 416R crucible.  Depending on how they harden the slide, it will withstand between 42,000 lbs force to 93,000 lbs force before yield in tensile stress.

Oh thanks! This info is very handy! Any thing else this ignorant one needs to know?

OK...went with the non MOS milling due to economic reasons. I still got a G40 for that I figured. Don't know if the milling had the mounting holes for an Red Dot any ways.

I got a few frills, side serrations grips, some sharp edges curved and such, a polymer rear adjustable sight and polymer front sight. And paid for its assemblage with the parts kit. For 392 about including my state's evil state tax, just 8 bucks under budget for me.

I already got a 22Lb Gen 3 RSA and spare barrels...may have to get a 17 pound RSA for the 40 SW conversion?

Any one know what is a good 40 SW Pound spring is?

Not off hand, but is awesome to see someone post after 10:00 pm 😀

Well getting the slide in a mere 3-5 weeks as its milled from a blank after a live text chat exchange as I was curious how long it was going to take. I figured about that longish about anyways. I'm not getting "SPEED HOLES!" in it as I see that's a good way to get junk in the action when in the wilderhood. Never could understand "SPEED HOLES!" on a slide but for lookticooliness, except for where there is a compensated barrel to account for. I think it would be playing around with spring weights to figure out the best one needed to stop FTFs from happening.

I hear you about the slide lightening ops.

I get that top tier shooters can shoot faster than the gun can cycle.  Steve Nastoff produced his "supercomp" with a shorter than 5" slide specifically to reduce cycle time once he realized he was waiting on the action before he could take the next shot.  But opening the slide to debris in the way those cuts now do detract for the core goal which is to test and improve your practical skills.

When stuff like that started appearing I new we had "jumped the shark" in practical shooting sports.  I am not going to carry a full house race gun under my coat, use it for dangerous game defense or take it into the field for a life/death operation.

They need a stage tossed in every once in a while where you are required to start with your gun in a box of sand.

OK GOT IT! Had the corners rounded, straight serrations back and front OEM nose a parts kit and paid a 25 dollar assembly fee also had about the same sights on my G40 and when it came I put in a alphawolf barrel 6" 10mm (the SS matte KKM barrel for when not using the 40S&W barrel for practice) with my 22 LB gen3 spring, and it fits snug on the G40 and it works!

Lonewolf distributing agent said the Alphawolf model 20L Gen 3 slide was made to work on the G40, so think this is a good investment.
