Weston

Hello,

I'm currently prepping for a backpacking trip with the family in grizzly country and have decided to carry my Glock 20 rather than my .44 mag.

With components so hard to get lately I've been unable to find longshot, which is what I was hoping for to replicate the Underwood load found in the pull down. That said, I have a handful of other powders and was curious if anyone else had any stout loads with these bullets using other powders. Obviously I will work up just looking for some powders and what others have had success with.  I've got a handful of VV powders and blue dot along with 5 or so other fairly common pistol powders.

I don't typically load for handguns, but the lack of availability of factory loaded ammo that I thought would be reliable pushed me into it for this instance.

Thanks for any advice!

Welcome Weston, I have gotten good results with power pistol, BE-86, and Blue Dot, but am confident some of the others will shed more light on this. If it were me, I would look at Midway and or other places for some Underwood 220gr hard cast

Thanks Ken, I've got a bunch of blue dot I may try. Still looking for more insight! Thanks guys.

Hey Weston,
If you are going to be in grizzly country, you should seriously consider a 200, or  220gr hard cast load, preferably from Underwood or other high performance vendor.

As for Blue Dot, there seem to be a general consensus that 10.4gr's of BD under a  180gr XTP or HAP is the sweet spot; at least for me. This load is for sure more accurate than I am 😀

If you have blue dot I would look for a lead bullet with as wide a meplat that will feed from your gun. Personally I think anything past 180-200gr you are at the point of diminishing returns.

The Underwood penetrates that have had test thru hard and soft medium has seen the penetrators don't penetrate in a straight line like the hard cast lead will.  I would avoid hp's and jacketed rn.  Montana bullet works cat a great 200gr wide flat nose.  Not sure if they are available at this time.  Good luck and enjoy
