Was asked this same question from a person at the range they struggle with the slide on a full size 1911 in 45 was able to operate a XDE 45 with some difficulty. I am wondering about a 40 would the spring be lighter than a 45.
You can't fix stupid but you can numb it for a while with a 2X4

According to Wolff gunsprings, Full size Colt 1911s recoil springs are:

45acp have a 16 lb recoil spring.
40 S&W are 19lb  (I prefer an 18lb.)
9mm/38 super are 14lb.  (My own Springfield Range Officer 9mm needs a 9lb to function with my USPSA loads)

Hope this helps.

After I tore my Ulnar Nerve, I could not grip a Slide to rack it
A Friend suggested getting the correct sized Rubber Hose that would both; Fit over the Barrel AND inside the Dust Cover
Then by pushing the Barrel into the Hose, the Hose will inturn rack the Slide
I used this method until I could get a good grip on the Slide by Hand

Also .... Pull / hold the Slide with one Hand as you push the Frame away from you with the other
This helps quite a bit too

Hope this helps
So tell me again how Trump was worse then the 8 years before .... AND what came after HIM !

Thanks for the replies. Her hands are weak from what's called COVID long haul. It affects the muscle strength in her hand and arms. She found if she cocked the hammer on the 1911 she could then rack the slide ok. So that's her plan for now. She is starting to get her strength back now it's a hell of a deal.

Absolutely, the push pull motion is very helpful if she can manage it, ran into this due to arthritis until I got it fixed

Can't go wrong with a mid size .38 if she can pull the trigger.....

Thanks for the thoughts she is now able to rack the slide on the XDS again so she is back to carrying it again.

What PF do you run?
My 9mm minor ammo runs between 127-131 depending on the chronograph.

I thought so, isn't the cycle time rather slow just above the power floor?

I tried that back in the day and I found out that my trigger finger was beating the cycle / reset time of the trigger and it cost me time to pull the trigger again. Had you noticed you beating the trigger reset and did you find a way to fix it?

For steel it "generally" worked just fine on stages like Five to go or outer limits but double trouble (no longer shot AFAIK) was too slow.
