SS 109 5.56x45

I scored some of this SS109 ammo on-line, so I thought I'd do a pull-down on it. This is the same 62gr NATO spec as the M855 but doesn't have the green tip.

Shot five rounds at 100 yards out of my M&P15 Sport II topped with a Vortex 1x6x24 S. E. and managed a 2" group. The five round velocity average was 2841 fps on a 43° day. Velocity might be a bit higher on a warm summer day.

This is Serbian made ammo according to the SSU head stamp.













I made a feeble attempt to do a cut-away on the bullet. You can see where the lead joins the steel at the tip..
Placed the bullet on a magnet and it is definitely magnetic.

Any idea on what the powder is?

Being that this is European made I couldn't even speculate on what it might be. From its charge weight and velocity yield we can tell its burning rate is somewhere close to AA2460.. I would suspect that PPU contracted with maybe Nobel or some other European propellant manufacturer.

Can not say for sure but I found some info for Serbia made powder but no pictures of the powder to compare.
Data for the M855 SS109  using SB 511 powder  The charge weight shown was 1.68 Gram = 25.93 Grains
Velocity shown as 814 Meters per sec = 2998.699 Feet per sec
Bullet weight 4.0 Grams - 61.7296 Grains
