Temporarily (maybe permanently) going to 10 and .45 super due to primer shortage

Today I did an evaluation of my available primers and my large pistol primers outnumber my small pistol primers nearly two to one so I'm going to download my 10's and shoot some .45 super to equalize my stock. I actually have quite a bit of both primers but resource balancing seems to be a better tack than using up all of one.

Hopefully this primer issue is gone before too long.

Funny, I was just in my reloading closet having similar thoughts about choose what I shoot on the basis of what primers I have.  Though I have more small pistol than large but about 2K.

I was also thinking to myself "Since when did having only 25K primers on hand become low stock"....

If not already so, I hate to say it but at least 10k is what a reasonably serious shooter (competitors even more so) needs on hand nowadays... think of it as "the new normal" :-)

Back when I was shooting 800 (and up) rounds a week I just got in the habit of having a six month supply on hand, and buying to replenish as I used them. Whatever the amount of components a shooter thinks they need, predicting shortages seems to be a good way to go forward.

Yeah.  I thought I had a bunch, but then I started breaking them down into their categories.  Eight possible sizes divided into 25K only gives me a couple thousand of each time.  I am in pretty good shape for large rifle and pistol, and OK for small pistol.  Small rifle is below what I would need to load up all my brass.  Very short on magnum primers, but I don't shoot that much of those.

gnappi, interesting idea in general. I too am almost out of small pistol primers but have an unopened box of large pistol primers and like 500 165g 10mm pull downs I could reload at any time. Was saving them for 40 call experimentation but it has failed with my current 40 call gun so moving right along with your idea of a light charge 10mm which I like to shoot light anyway. I also have a couple of nice 10's I do like to shoot so it may work out. The only issue I have is I already have full power 10,s like 1000 or so but I do like light so I may give them a try.  Craig

This thread made me think I should inventory my primers. 27K LP, 18K SP, 12K SR and about 5k LR. Keep them in the box in ammo cans. I'm ok still :)

I learned a harsh lesson back in 2013 when I had to pay $74 for a brick of $hitty Thunderterd 22LR . I took action against stupid political "gun panics". Been investing into handloading since 2014 with small bi-weekly purchases and it adds up nicely ! Shoot "one" buy "two".  Current inventory is 91,000 primers

Well that didn't work like I wanted it to.

I just thought I was well stocked.....

Unless I'm wrong, and I hope I am, these ammo shortages and overall weapon price gouging will not go away anytime soon : (

Well I was reloading 300 blackout and 45 long Colt so was using small rifle primers and large pistol primers thinking it was a bummer to use up the small rifle primers as I needed them for 9mm pistol. When that is what you have to worry about what has the reloading world come to anyway? A least there is hope in a light 10mm load I  can do!!!  Craig
