One of my local GS's has carried Federal's HST 124gr + P in boxes of 50 in the recent past, and were selling for aprx $30.00, which isn't a half bad price. Well, they have been out for about 3 weeks, and are now selling them for $44.00...Just glad I got a bunch of them when the price was right

It's not gouging. Here in Ohio at 'Fin Feather Fur' what was $12 became $23 then $40. They have to pay more just to be able to get it and they can't sell it for what or less than what they paid. At least they're providing it for those that have none with the pistol they purchased. At this past weekend's Akron show, 9mm FMJ was going for $25-$40 and those $25 boxes didn't last long.

I found some Winchester 115 fmj at Academy sports for 13.99 per 50. Then this morning I got an email from CHeaper than dirt advertising Magtech 115 fmj for 59.89 per 50.  :o
Glad I pick up my allotted 3 boxes. Sad really....
Youth and exuberance are no match for age and treachery.

Yea, I suppose vista outdoor / Federal jacked up their prices to the GS's

I think current ammo prices are completely ridiculous right now.  I also believe in supply and demand economics.
Supply is certainly short do to all the spike in demand, panic buying and yes profiteering.  Such as people buying all the $12.99 9mm early on and now selling it at guns shows and online for $59.98 etc.....  No different than the jackasses that drove all over 4 states 6 months ago purchasing all the $1.99 hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes they could find, to through it in a couple storage garages and sell on Amazon for $39.99....

I'm sorry but lead, brass, copper, gun powder and other raw commodity prices have not skyrocketed during covid nor rioting.  No doubt their availability is severely curtailed from panic buying.   It doesn't suddenly cost more to produce ammo.  As supply is so curtailed everyone is raising margins dramatically on the inventory they do have to offset the volumetric margins they used to make.  I do not believe manufactures are driving up prices...  I'd be far more focused on the wholesalers, dealers, retailers and oh yes, profiteers...

This is very similar to the situation we found ourselves after the horrible Sandy Hook disaster in 2013.  After that event occurred, I was determined to never get caught like that again.  Of course this situation is many magnitudes worse and likely linger for far longer.  Noah didn't start on the Ark after is began raining.
