Decision to be made: Glock 40 or XD(M)

I've been looking for a 10 mm handgun and have narrowed it down to either the Glock 40 or the Springfield XD(M) 5.25". For those who have used them both what do you prefer? I have heard that the Glock polygonal barrel might give up some FPS over a regular rifling. Is this true or a myth?

I will be using it while back country ATVing.

Also, what dealers do you go thru when buying online?

Thanks.

Marchloom, Welcome to the Forum!  What do you see as your intended use for the pistol? ATV Back Country...What do you think you will encounter?  Bears?, Cats?, Hogs? Other?

Glock with its higher capacity magazines, are hard to beat with capacity, reliability and durability in the field!
I don't think Glocks give up enough velocity to worry over especially with the 6" barrels.
The thing that I didn't like about the 5.25 XDM, is the open cutout in the slide, I feel debris dirt and other foreign objects could get inside to cause issues.
The dealers are just one aspect of the online process, availability is another...

Good luck with your decision and best regards!  Enjoy the forum! :D

In the North Idaho area bears are probably the only problem that I will encounter, besides maybe an occasional meth lab. I think the 10 mm would be the best to handle both problems if encountered. I just don't want to carry 2 guns, my S&W 29 and Glock 21.

I was also considering a conversion using my Glock 21. If I went that way what company would you recommend for the barrel and associated parts?

G-21 conversion to 10mm requires the barrels swap and also the extractor change to the 10mm version for best reliability.

I really enjoy my Glock 40.   Suppressor height sights and a micro red dot is an excellent set up.   A lone wolf barrel will allow you to shoot cast bullets and pick up a little speed.

I agree the Glock has already been proven in the field.

You might want to consider the Glock 20. I have the Gen 4. The barrel and slide are shorter, which might make it more compact and accessible when drawing from an ATV.

I also have the G40, which is an excellent pistol. If you want to shoot at distance, the G40 is the way to go.

Good luck with your choice...

Afternoon Marchboom,
Either weapon would be a great woods / ATV travel gun, but as mentioned previously, the G20 has a proven track record. As for carrying it / easy access, you may want to consider something like the Kenai Chest Rig by GunfightersINC. The fit is great, as well as not hindering your ATV travels

Another vote for if you already have a 21/.45 ACP get a conversion barrel, extractor and magazine...that is the cheap way out...  You could also opt for a 6" barrel to get more velocity.

That said, I have a G40 and later bought both a G20/3 and G29/3....  I hated both of them and sent them down the road. The G40 is much more pleasant to shoot with full loads....

I have three ways of carrying my G40.

Simply Rugged CUDA

In the truck a Bagmaster Vertcal Carry Pouch

Or on an OHRV, backpacking with a waist pack...Hill People Gear Runners Kit Bag

I'm very happy with the G40.  Has been very accurate and reliable...

Bought an extra Lone Wolf barrel in .357 SIG and it is an accurate, flat shooting, low recoil laser...

As to a conversion barrel, I have Lone Wolf barrels in .357 SIG for the G40 and also for a G23 as well as a 9mm conversion barrel...all work great and accuracy is excellent.  I've also looked at the KKM 7" barrel for the G40...
