Car / Truck gun: rifle or shotgun?

I enthusiastically advise that if you buy a dedicated "truck gun", whatever the definition of that supremely vague term is, you never leave it unattended under any circumstance. It goes in and out with you. This is one of the main ways to prevent criminals from obtaining guns and goes hand in hand with responsible gun ownership. I can't tell you just how many felon in possession/VOP cases I've worked on where the defendant stole firearms out of easily accessible vehicles, either because it was unlocked, did not auto-lock because the key signal was still being received by the ECU from inside the home, or it was a smash and grab.

If you have a way to lock it, great, but then you lose ease of access, so it's a balancing act of what's best for you.

5.7 MIke makes a great, great point.  My personal rule is that any gun not in my immediate control is locked up.  This is problematic in a car that is so easily compromised.  A truck gun for me lives in an integrated locked storage device that is not easily breeched and is the gun I fight my way back to if needed.  At present I have no such locking structure, so a gun only travels in the truck with me when I am going to a destination where guns are welcome.  I have recently started dusting off my welding skills and am thinking about welding up something custom for under a rear seat though.

There was a nice steel lock box which had a cable to attached to auto or truck seat platform frames to make it somewhat secure.  It would require tools and time to get to it.
This could be used when going to locations like hospital or post office where there are we are prohibited from carry.

I do the same, or similar, with a lock box secured under the passenger seat, when driving, it is under a newspaper next to me (just asking for trouble if a tall vehicle pulls up at a stop light and it's exposed) and when at work, the G30 is in the lock box. Because our work parking lot is regularly patrolled, and my work car is a piece, it's likely not an issue, Lol

I could be wrong, but most would be punk ass thieves are looking for a quick smash and grab, hauling along bolt cutters to steal from a crap mobile like my work car is unlikely with all the nice cars around our lot 😂

For those interested in something like this, googling AR-15 car rack brings back a wealth of options that PD's consider secure.

Tons of great ideas / options, Thanks sqlbullet
