Favorite General Self Defense 10mm Bullet Poll -

REDLINE

The idea behind this poll is what you like loaded in your 10mm for GENERAL Self Defense, more or less revolving around what you prefer to carry:  In town, while driving, at work, in the house,...  This poll IS NOT for what you prefer loaded in your 10mm for Hunting of any kind or Woods Defense.

I had a hard time deciding on whether or not to put the poll in "Factory 10mm Ammo" or "Reloading 10mm Ammo", and in the end placed it where it is because some bullet choices are simply not available in Factory loaded ammo.

This is two polls in one.  First voting on choices 1 - 11 for favorite bullet construction.  Second voting on favorite bullet weight.  Obviously both get voted on at the same time.  But on a positive note as a side kicker for those like me who sometimes have a hard time making up their mind, UP TO 4 different votes can be placed by each individual between the 23 total choices.

Users can change their vote at any time, as sometimes we change our minds over time.  And this poll has no expiration date.

Lastly, if I did accidentally or ignorantly miss a choice that should be up there to vote on, I'm sorry in advance.  Hopefully the above choices cover it, but if not, any registered user can mention it in a post below.

I'm interested in the answers as I just recently started shooting 10mm and I have no idea which bullets perform the best.  As of right now, I'm carrying 180gr XTP at about 1200 fps, but I've heard that the XTP is fairly slow at expanding and there's a decent chance that it won't expand completely in a 2-legged attacker.

I've read some that Gold Dots are one of the best, but I'd like to hear more opinions as well.

I mostly carry the Hornady 200 gr XTP's loaded to 1200 fps, but do have Barnes 140 gr TAC-XP and they do open as advertized, Remington 165 gr Golden Sabers and Montana Glod 165 JHP's 1350 fps, and also Speer 180 gr Gold Dots at 1300 fps.

These have worked well from my S&W and also at slightly slower velocities from the Glock 29 factory barrel.

I do cast the Lyman 156 gr Devastator HP that is also quite a pepper with its large hollow cavity.

I currently carry Buffalo Bore 180 grain JHP at an advertised 1350 fps, tested as 1327 by Intercooler.  I bought 5 boxes of these about a year ago, function tested with two boxes and have carried the rest for the past year.  They are due to be cycled out.

I have not yet decided on my new carry load.  I have been planning on moving to handloads so I can shoot more often with my carry load without breaking the bank.  I am considering three options.

One, Nosler 180 grain JHP loaded to 1350-1400 fps.
Two, 165 gr SWCHP loaded to 1400+ fps.  This would require a mold conversion on a Lee 6 cavity mold and a bunch of testing.
Three, 175 gr SWC loaded 1400 fps.  This would use the same mold as above, but without the HP conversion.

Since I haven't really had time to work on option two this year like I thought I would, I will be going with option one or option three.  Most likely option three now that I have figured out a load for that bullet that feeds reliabily in my 1911.

Currently 180 gr Hornady,    loaded up some others but haven't ran enought of them threw guns to carry them yet.

for general carry, i like 180 gr XTP's, though i do have a hot 200gr XTP load i really like.

26 votes and definiately some variance of opinion.  Nice to see we don't all think exactly alike.  Of course at the same time different individuals from different locations have to make accomodations for varying risks too.  It would appear there is at least some love for all but the rarest contenders in regard to availability.

Any chance some of our newer members would be interested in adding to the poll results?

I'm still going through a few hundred 165 GDHPs I loaded up to 1311 fps, nothing all that crazy, but they performed well.  I have 400, 180 gr XTPs sitting in the cabinet that I'll start playing with in the Spring, and depending on the results may move to them.  But I am always very impressed by the uniform expansion of a Gold Dot when I see them recovered from a gel test.

Yes it's hard to beat the expansion and performance of the Gold Dots, I wish they made the 200 grain so we could drive them like a Top Fuel dragster in the quarter mile!  1240-1280 fps

The supplies of Gold Dots still short for demans and the pricing reflects it.... :(
