Here's the situation, G29/3, 10 round mag, #4 mag follower, Wolff 21lb uncaptured recoil spring, 180gr cast bullet w/13gr #9, oal 1.250, the slide locks open w/1 round left in mag. Thumb IS NOT pushing the slide release up on recoil. I bent the slide release spring to increase tension--still locks open.

Any thoughts??

You are showing OAL as 1.50"  You might want to try 1.2500" or even shorter.  Not sure if that will fix things.
Check the Slide Lock spring function without the slide on the frame to see what could be your issue.

Is the tail end of the spring in the correct location?

But yeah OAL doesn't sound right.

Had to typo that.  I can't imagine a 1.500" would fit in the magazine.

Three possibilities:

You are hitting it. I know you are certain you aren't, and you might be right.

Something else is hitting the slide stop (last round, follower, etc)

The spring is not strong enough and is allowing inertia to force the slide stop up.

Assuming that this behavior is not magazine dependent, and assuming you are right about not hitting it with your thumb, then I gotta think it is the slide stop spring.

SOLUTION--even though new the mag springs ARE WEAK,  new Wolff springs are on order.

I have seen that happen on Glocks shooting snappy rounds & having an extended slide lock lever.

Any chance that your gun has a longer extended slide lock? That extra length adds more weight farther from the fulcrum so makes it easier for recoil to move it into slide lock.

having an extended slide lock level

The slide release is OEM standard size.
