I spoke with the Customer Service people at Smith and Wesson, learning that one of the men had rechambered a S&W Model 610 to the 10mm Magnum cartridge. I found this particularly interesting because the round develops energies similar to the .44 Remington Magnum, but using a .400" diameter bullet.

Naturally, the projectiles used were of the heavier variety (200 grains) and were generally used for hunting/silhouette shooting and the like. It has been nearly 25 years since anyone has produced a handgun chambered for the cartridge. While brass was available from Starline, I am not sure if it is available today.

The round worked well in the field, (good penetration at range, plenty of energy to dispatch game, etc.). If an autoloader (or revolver) with, say, an 8"+ barrel were available today, would it generate more interest than it did at the cartridge/platform's inception?

Starline still catalogs the brass.  They have it in stock as I type this.

There are a fair number of guys who have reamed 610's to 10mm magnum.  As much as I love my 10's though, I gotta admit I think the 41 magnum is a better option.  We already have issues with the current crop of .400 bullets not standing up well to the velocities a 10mm Auto can generate, let alone the 10mm Mag.  For the scant price of an extra .010" the 41 magnum is available in a wide variety of guns, and with a wide variety of bullets suitable to it's velocities.

I own two .41 Magnum revolvers (a Model 58 and a 6" barreled Model 657). These two are superb shooters and work in a number of applications. There's nothing wrong with them. I simply wonder if a decent 220-grain 10mm Magnum load couldn't "waltz" with the best of them?

I am sure it could, and at least a few guys here have 10mm magnums.  They will chime in I bet.

With hard cast, a fine choice.  For JHP's bullet selection will be limited.

I often considered having my 10mm revolvers reamed to 10mm Magnum, and dismissed it.  I run .45 Super in my 625 as a 'woods carry round' that's sufficient for my needs, and get about 1200 fps from a 200-gr. bullet.  If your lucky enough, to have a vintage Dan Wesson revolver in .460 Rowland, it will also handle the Super with ease.  The .41 Magnum is a very fine round, and also; up to the job!

You could buy a custom reamed/timed cylinder for the 10mm Magnum Cartridge for less than you think. Clement Custom Guns (Dave Clement) can, and will, manufacture the cylinder at an affordable price.
