LW Custom Barrel lengths

I contacted LWD and asked about this. they said they can cut down their 9" barrel for $24.95 for any length requested.   I would like to make my G20 into a great hunting Gun and want to take advantage of the length that will work well but not be ugly as heck.

I have concerns about the 9" barrel in that it would seem to put a lot of force on the barrel lug when fired and possibly be less accurate due to movement beyond the end of the slide.   Currently I would like to use my stock Gen 4 slide. Hoping to hold out for a Gen 4 Long Slide at some point in the future.. I currently have the 2 port LW barrel and like it at 5.5 inches.   I see the 6" barrel has some really good FPS gains over stock.  so now I am leaning toward something in the 7" range and possibly ported.  then if I add a long slide at some point I could still use the same barrel.   Even stock that only has me 2" beyond the end of the barrel.  I thought about going with a threaded barrel and comp but don't really want the extra weight or length.  also having to unscrew the comp each time to remove the barrel from the slide seems a lot of hassle.

Anyone want to give advice on these ideas? would the extra inch over a standard 6" long slide barrel add much?  is anyone using a custom length barrel?  I have seen several posts/video of the 9" barrel but not found any crono data compared to say stock or 5.5 ported or 6 inch extended, 6.5" threaded etc.  actually would like to port it like the factory Glock barrels.

The factors that affect the velocity will be the bullet weight and fit, powder used, the primer used to start the burning and the condition and specs of the barrel in the test.  Not all guns are created equal!

All that said you could see anywhere from 35 fps to upwards of 65 fps per inch of barrel change.

That 5.5 ported you have now will get the job done. I've killed 3 deer with the stock 4.6 barrel.

I would ask how much chamber support they are milling in the 9" barrel before committing the money.  I got a new production stock length G20 LDW barrel a month or so ago and it has the same or maybe micometer(s) less support than the stock barrel (I don't have the equipment to measure the depth accurately.   :o So much for feeling any more comfort shooting Underwood's stuff.  So, I got a Storm Lake stock length barrel to compare and it has very, very good chamber support and is still has a decently tight chamber.  slide racked a full magazine and had no feed or ejection issues.  It is a semi-fit but seats full battery out of the box.  Still need to get to the range for a true test.

It seems that the newer LWD barrels are not being made the way the were in the past and if I knew before the purchase, I would have been better off ponying up the extra $$$ for the SL to begin with.  You might consider seeing if SL could make you a custom length barrel as the they have the 6" for the G20.  Can't hurt to ask.  I would think Bar-Sto would make you one, but serious coin for the product.
