Interesting article. Just wish they would get off the follow up shot issue. Would like to see in articles the emphasize on practice with the 10mm that would eliminate issue with follow up shots and with a 10mm one can be proficient. It's getting old. Also to tout the Glock for reduced recoil in the poly frames. Also the article has the 180 gr Underwood pegged as a hunting load which can be used for such but it's a two legged load as well. They have the Norma load wrong. If I am incorrect please tell. They have the 200 gr that was 1200 in Norma at 1300. The 170 was 1300. Also the mentioning of ammo shortage and how the 10mm rounds were out there to be bought compared to the traditional, how true.

I am still waiting for that 170 grain bullet at 1300.

Any takers? Hornady? Corbon? Underwood?

krafcheck

Hopefully not carbon. They would cost 50 bucks for 20.  Carbon is expensive around here.

Locate the 170 you want to use (post here) and I will help twist an arm!

I can't find anything unfortunately. I checked Midway and Hornady for component bullets....no dice. PMC is the only manufacturer who produces them, but I didn't see them for sale as bullet components.

I would much rather have an XTP or a Gold Dot anyway.

Well they played with their little 9's and slow 45's in heavy guns for so long, not realizing just how anemic those were.  They weren't used to the real ammo in a semi-auto platform.  However it is skill that can be developed as we have known, besides many of the 10mm guys were messin' around with things like the 357 magnums and 44 magnums when our favorite cartridge made it appearance.  At that time, I was heavy into both, so I was not sensitive to recoil effects especially starting out with the heavier S&W1006.

Back in the day, Hornady was making a Turncated Cone 175 grain and a 200 gr HP.  If I recall, I think Sierra was making a 170 gr and a 190 gr HP.  The amount of choices started out slow, but quickly filled the weight spectrum from 130 to 220 grains.  The specs of the FBI wrapped around the use of a 180 grain HP bullet @ 980 fps from a 4 1/2" barrel, so the shift to that weight was only natural to fill the contracts. (Not a bad thing either)  Winchester's Black Talon (200gr @ 980 fps) was an answer to the 45 guys wanting a heavier bullet that would match their slow and heavy bullet performance of the 45ACP's.

With the proliferation of the 40 (Short & Weak) the bullet designs had shifted towards the 950 fps sweet spot meeting the FBI criteria or other bullet weights meeting that energy and ballistic requirements for penetration and barriers.  Therefore as 10mm enthusiast having known the potential of the "REAL DEAL"  such as Norma's 200FMJ at 1200 and 175JHP at 1300+ we were left to use what was on the market even till this day.  Therefore we see over expansion and bullets which shear or fragment at the velocities we get from handloads or good companies like Underwood, Buffalo Bore and Double Tap.

We just need to realize the bullet's limitations and select those that seem to provide the best at the velocity they are being driven.  Hornady has kept their XTP's with in the acceptable performance range.  Speer with their Gold Dot's design of a heavy plated / bonded bullet is another great choice, Remington's Golden Sabers also, but some of the overlooked are the Sierra bullet lineup.  Some bullets out there are either too expensive (Barnes 100% copper TAc-XT)(Winchester SilverTips) for much practice or not offered as a choice in our 10mm cartridge or as components, HST, Ranger T & Bonded T, HydroShock to mention a few.  ???

Given the current situation and supply and demand vs. cost this will not likely change any time real soon!   :o
So we take what we can get!  :-[

Thanks for the article.  Always nice to read something about the 10mm.

Here is another I liked on the Nighthawk Custom Heinie 6" 10mm (in the running for my next 10mm, along with Fusion and possibly STI's Perfect 10): http://fmgpublications.ipaperus.com/FMGPublications/GUNS/GUNS1012/

There is also a great story of Jeff Cooper doing a canoe trip in Mexico (if the movie Deliverance had been released prior to his journey, I wonder if he would have changed his mind on going.).  Mexico does not allow .45 caliber handguns, so Jeff used a 1911 in 10mm to great success.  His companion brought a S&W revolver, which had to be frequently disassembled and cleaned to keep it functional, where as Jeff's 1911 worked without a hitch through all the muck, dirt and water.  This story is in his book "Another Country", and, like all his other publications, a must read for handgun fans, and required for 1911 fans.  The other book he wrote with great wisdom and stories is "To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth."  http://www.jeffcooperbooks.com
