Make 10mm a Kitten to Shoot

My son and I spent some time shooting last Saturday down at the cabin.

Started off with some light 44 Magnum.  265 grain SWCHP at 1,000 fps from an 8" Redhawk with a 2X scope.  Load was 8.0 grains of W231.  Very light recoil and good groups at 25 yards.

After this warm up....

44 Magnum, 180 grain JHC @ 1900 fps.  Load was 31.5 grains of H110 under a 180 grain Sierra JHC.  It was a wake up after the light loads.
44 Magnum, 265 grain SWCHP @ 1400 fps.  Load was 21.5 grains of H110 under an NOE SWCHP cast bullet.  The blast/shockwave was less than the 180 grain, but the recoil a little more

Now that we were in the mindset...Time for the Desert Eagle.

50 AE, Hornady 300 Gr XTP factory load @ 1475 fps.  The gun was lighter and the gross recoil was more, so the felt recoil was way up there.
50 AE, 275 Grain Gold Dot over H110 loads ranging from 34.0 to 36.4 grains.  This was an extrapolated load based on other data.  Velocity ranged from 1460fps to 1590 fps.  These were spicy to say the least.

And with that we stepped back a bit in recoil to some full house 10mm loads from a Glock 29.  Managing recoil is a very individual and subjective topic, but I will tell you, after some healthy 44 Mag and 50 AE loads the 10mm doesn't seem like much at all.  After about 200 rounds of 10mm, we finished off the day with 200 rounds or so of 9mm (P-35, Beretta 92G, Rex Zero1) and some 357 magnum rounds loaded to 38 special specs (4 grains of W231 for about 850 fps) from a 6" 28-2.

It was a good  afternoon with my son!

Sounds like a great time for you both. Any chance to get out of the house and into nature is great ! [emoji1360]

For sure, take our two grown daughters out 4 or 5 times a year for some range time, neither of which have embraced the 10mm....but that's ok, they love shooting the 9, 45, and 22 though

I agree, the downward progression from the big bores back to the 10mm makes it feel quite tame.  Had these out at the range this weekend and my 10mm groups were much better after 49 rounds on the 460V.  Sadly, my son hasn't joined me at the range in quite awhile.

I fondly remember my days fixing cars, target shooting, hunting and fishing with my dad, now that he's gone these memories are the best of many others.

Sql, your kids will remember them too.

Sadly my son has no interest in anything I do, the phone occupies Waaayyyy too much of his time for a 27 year old. I read a survey on high school kids who would rather lose a finger than lose a phone forever. How sad.

Strange. Every time I'm at the range, I have to fight the urge to put my phone on a target frame and centerpunch the cursed thing. Every time. Different generations.

My stepdaughters are like your son. Smart as heck with a phone in their hand, take away the phone and they are instant idiots. They don't have the experiences of actually having done things in their lives, and all that entails.

A true fact, as with our 24 and 26 year old daughters. they are smart as a wip, take away their phones and look out 😀😙😙
