Ruger Super Redhawk Accuracy Testing

We got a Super Redhawk in 10mm and it quickly became a favorite. It was even more rewarding to shoot after getting a bullet mold that worked well in the 10mm dropping a bullet that weighed 203 with gas check without lube. For good or bad, this bullet likes some velocity to work best and we settled on a load that had a SD of 9 FPS. We do most revolver load testing at 25 yards and the SRH would consistently put 6 rounds into 1-1.25" groups or 4-5 MOA but that was with iron sights. We put a cheap scope on it and started increasing the distance to see if that degree of accuracy would hold up for 6-shot groups and it did. At 50 yards it was around 2.125", at 100 yards it was 4" and then we tried it at 200 yards where it shot a great 5-shot group just over 5" BUT unfortunately I shot 6 shots and the remaining shot just nipped the paper making the group size 7.625" and still close to that 4 MOA standard at 3.8 MOA. The next step is to get a little better rest and maybe different optics to get more of the human error out to see what the revolver-ammo combination is doing.

Those targets are very enlightening as well as they are a great example of how bullet flight is really an oscilation about an axis.  In every target there is a clear "center" to the group, and as the targets get further out you can just see the bullets expanding the same variations.

Don't ever discount the accuracy of any of the Ruger Redhawks or Blackhawks. My little brother shoots off hand matchs against rifles at 100 yds with several of his Blackhawks and Redhawk in 44 mag. The game is a 6" round steel plate at 100yds. You can bring whatever you want, opensights, scoped, rifle, pistol, doesn't matter but it's an off hand game. It's 10 bucks a shot. He shoots 240gr Speer GD bullets on top of 22grs 2400, full house loads. He will take yer money. That series of Ruger pistols are incredibly accurate. Don't be surprised if it gets better the more you shoot it. I think it's one of the most accurate big bore pistols you can buy.

I had only set up my target at 50 yards to make sure I was hitting the paper and get a rough estimate of group size. Get this, I hadn't even zero'ed the scope in yet. Rest assured the single flyer was MY fault, not the Pistol's fault.

I do have two 10mm carbines, both with a red dot. A Mechtech where I use my Dan Wesson Razorback as a lower, and my TNW Aero survival rifle.
