Gen 4 Glock 20 setup?

I have been enjoying this forum over the past few weeks, glad to have stumbled upon it.

I thought I would share a picture of my newest firearm, a gen 4 glock 20.

I have a few questions that I would love to get some feedback on if you all have the time.

For starters, I should mention, my primary use for this 20 will be to carry while hiking, fishing, and hunting. I have a big bore revolver as well but id like to try carrying the 20 as it is noticeably lighter in weight. I don't reload as of yet so anything I shoot will be factory over the counter stuff. Right now I'm seeing some 220 grain hard cast buffalo bore that should fit the bill and is available locally.

So far I have ran 100 rounds of the armscor 180 gr stuff with no issue. Gun functioned flawlessly. I'm now starting to look at aftermarket barrels, and spring arrangements to more ideally handle the hotter loaded 220gr BB hard cast stuff. Is there a preferred brand of stainless barrel? Right now I'm leaning towards the lone wolf stainless 4.6in length as it seams reasonably priced. I have a friend that runs it and has been satisfied with the performance although I don't think he has run much hard cast stuff through it.

If not the lone wolf then what brands would you folks recommend?

Now for my rsa setup.
I'm looking at running either a lone wolf adaptor which I believe allowes me to run any gen 3 rsa in my gen 4. Another option I'm seeing is the glockmeister stainless single spring rsa designed for the gen 4. Is one more reliable than the other? Lastly what weight spring would be ideal for the hot and heavy hard cast stuff from BB and or the Underwood equivalent?

thanks,

Trevor

I have one.  Have an aftermarket (Lone Wolf) barrel.  I have a couple aftermarket captive spring sets.

I went back to 100% stock because it runs flawlessly with every ammo I've tried......

EXCEPT 220g hardcast Underwood.  Give a box of BB to see how it goes, I guess.

I have the 24 pound RSA for the Gen 4 from Glockmeister. I have 200 rounds on it, mostly Underwood, with no issues. I did have one FtF issue with Underwood using the stock spring.

With the Gen 4 RSA from Glockmeister you don't need any adapters. Just drop it right in and shoot it.

As far as Lone wolf barrels go, I have a G20 .357 Sig conversion barrel. It works great. About the only thing I can say about it is it is designed to match grade specs, so shooting dirty ammunition will cause malfunctions after 50 or so rounds. With top quality ammo (Underwood and Speer Lawman) I had no issues.

I had a Gen 4 G20 with a 6 inch KKM barrel and I wanted it for the same reasons as you. Fishing, hiking and hunting here in Alaska.  I handloaded 200 grain WFNGC bullets both from Double Tap and Beartooth. The KKM is a good quality barrel. I have no experience with the Lone Wolf barrels. I have read on various internet forums some folks had feeding trouble with the Lone Wolf barrels.  Apparently, some of the chambers were a little tight with heavy hardcast bullets which Lone Wolf readily fixed for them. I've had no such problems with either factory loads or handloads in the KKM barrel but the heaviest I've shot is 200 grains. I also did not change out the recoil spring assembly.

I no longer have the gun as a co-worker wanted it more than I did. Primarily because I have a G40 on order which hopefully will ship the end of this month. I intend to put the 6 inch KKM barrel into that pistol. I don't plan on swapping recoil spring assemblies on the G40 either.

Although, Glock doesn't recommend the use of hard cast lead bullets in their barrels, lots of people are shooting lead. You just need to be judicious about it and make sure it is not getting badly leaded. It's not hard to clean the lead from your barrel.

On the other hand, the Glock trigger takes some work. I first tried a Ghost 3.5 pound connecter which helped a little but then I installed a Zevtech Fulcrum trigger which made a huge difference as it is adjustable for both pretravel and overtravel. I removed the Zevtech from my G20 before selling it and will be installing it in my G40 once it arrives.

With respect to sights, I've used both a set of Dawson Precision adjustables and a Trijicon RMR. I prefer either to the stock Glock sights. I'm not totally convinced reflex sights are the way to go just yet on a pistol for hiking, fishing and hunting in Alaska but I'm warming up to them. Reflex sights certainly offer the precision needed for hunting but I'm nowhere near as fast with them as I am with iron sights. We'll see if I can remedy that issue or not.

As a general woods carry and hunting handgun for smaller Alaskan game, I think it's a good compromise between weight, power and portability. Easy to carry on salmon streams while fishing and suitable for smacking blacktails, maybe caribou and black bear under the right circumstances too.

As for the other bears, be they brown or grizzly, I've been party to killing 5 browns and one grizzly with rifles so I've experienced first hand how they react to being shot and I'm convinced the best way to stop a charging bear at 25 feet on a salmon stream is to disrupt the central nervous system. The skull and neck vertebrae are stout but they are not impervious and I believe a good 200 grain hardcast will sufficiently penetrate either to get the job done. Under no circumstances, would I deliberately hunt the big bears with a Glock 10mm but a defense of life situation is a very different set of unfortunate circumstances.

I have a G4 G20. Completely stock, except the KKM 6" barrel.

I haven't shot the BB 220 hardcast....I have shot some of their other loads; as well as Underwood. I haven't had any issues using the stock RSA.

I have a g20c with oem compensated barrel and 2 6" 357sig and 10mm lone wolf after market barrels. The only problem I had is that my oem barrel using sig performance ammo put small bulge on brass. Not noticeable to the naked eye at quick glance but if studied you can spot it. Made for some horrid feed issues in aftermarket lw barrels. I've read that the lw barrels are a lil tight but lap over time don't have many rounds thought them yet.

Barrel - Get something with traditional rifling if you want to run unjacketed lead bullets through it. Lone Wolf, KKM Precision, and a few other manufacturers make these. If shooting unjacketed lead ammo is not a priority, then don't bother with this.

Light - Get a light for your gun! You want to carry this while camping, right? How will you shoot 'the thing that goes bump in the night' if you can't identify it? There aren't any streetlights in the woods.

Sights - Along the same line of reasoning, install night sights on your gun so you can hit what you want to kill when it's dark out.

Recoil spring - Most people seem to like 22 lb recoil springs for shooting full power ammo. The stock recoil spring seems to work fine for many people, but keep in mind that the factory weight recoil spring is the exact same as is used in the other full size Glocks, including the G17, G21, G22, G31.

Holster - Your gun isn't doing you any good inside your backpack. Carry it where you can access it. Bears, wild hogs, mooses, and other big animals like to eliminate threats to themselves at their own convenience, not yours.

I'm running my Gen 4 20 stock. I did polish the fire control parts as the trigger out of the box was terrible.

How's your experience been with full power loads running the stock setup?

My G20 G4  is stock with the exception I have a KKM 6" barrel. I've shot a lot of Underwood through the stock and KKM barrel and have had no real issues. The 6' is mainly for shooting lead and hunting/camping/hiking.  :D
