What are you folks using for a holster when afield?

I like and prefer leather (less noise afield) , or even ballistic nylon (can get noisy in brush) but not hard plastic / kydex, it's too noisy and all I know of are short leaving no protection for the forward end of the slide...

So, I went looking for an OWB holster and found only one, a nylon material with a mag pouch sewn into the front.  It's OK but I was still wanting leather.
I wrote a few holster makers on Ebay and one accommodated me by extending his pattern in an all leather rig and didn't even uplift the very inexpensive $45 price. It took a bit over a week but I'm happy that my long 10's are now closed from weather should I need to go afield on an invite I have.
The reason for the post is the next time I may look for something a bit less utilitarian,  Y'now... basket weave, snap, suede lining but for now I have it covered.

Morning Gary, you might want to call Rudy at Black Hills Leather. He had made several leather holsters for me, and have turned out well, plus he will expedite them for a price. Also, he can make one for about any gun unlike many shops

For field carry my son and I use chest rigs from either Diamond-D leather or Galco. I carry a Guncrafter 10mm 1911 with a six inch barrel in a 5" gun and my son carries a Dan Wesson Bruin 10mm 6" Long slide. The Galco folks don't list a long slide Great Alaskan but they will make you one.

We've used chest rigs for hunting, working around our place, and just woods bumming. Whether on horseback, ATV riding, on the tractor, or in the truck, the chest rig is out of the way and it carries well under a jacket or rain gear. The chest rig also keeps the long slide/barrel from jamming into the truck seat, thus jacking up ones' pants, and is out of the way for most work. The only thing you can't conveniently do with a chest rig on is carry an arm load of firewood into the house; it's just in the way for that.
Firearm resale value should be your kids' problem.

Love the chest rig and have owned some really good stuff.  Simply Rugged makes an inexpensive adapter that will allow you to use most all of your current holsters set up for chest carry.  You need their chesty puller straps to make it work and with patience got mine for around $50 on eBay.  Sold two of the $175 rigs after getting this set up.

I run a cordura nylon type chest rig with a thumb break. Works great.

I love quality leather, but the nylon works great.
