With me never hunted with a 10mm, I really am grasping at straws and guessing a lot about what I "think" it may do.  So, I'm probably the last person in the world that should be offering opinions.  And I often get hung up on "the numbers".   Which I know may not do what I guessed they would in the real world.

Which now has me questioning bullet choice altogether after nannyhammer mentioned what the xtp was rated at.

I looked on Hornady's website and the xtp's are rated at 1500 fps.  So, that's much closer to the velocity that I was getting with the 180 xtp, so I may should switch to it.  I could always back off a couple tenths of gr of powder to lower the velocity closer to what the bullet is rated at.

Hey John, it seems like we?ve talked about this in the past, but because you want a complete pass through when deer hunting, Lehigh?s Xtreme Hunter looks extremely promising for your desired results. Check out the below videos

Yeah, we've spoken about it.  And I have decided after archery season is underway, if I haven't gotten a deer by just before rifle season that I'm going to try to work up a few loads and the Lehigh was on the list of ones to try.  I wouldn't be too surprised with the lighter bullet, if I couldn't bump it up to close to 1800 fps.  While I don't know that to be true, though based on what the gun is doing with 155's, would lead to reason that the lighter bullets may exceed what I'm getting now.

I know all of that is relative and there's a lot of unknown variables were sealing the bore and blow by and everything else, but in general, if 155's clock in around 1770'ish fps, that 140 gr bullets would probably exceed that by at least some margin.

But again, I'm just guessing.

175 hard cast, the 140 lehigh will both be on the table.

Who know, maybe they've changed the bullet metal composition.  The 8th Edition Hornady manual shows 850-1300fps for the 155gr P/N 40000. For P/N 40040, the 180gr it shows 750-1450fps.  I would use the heavier bullet and hope that it holds up after it shed some of the initial velocity.  I'm currently running a home cast 185gr HP but so far nothing bigger than a possum has given me an opportunity.  Best of luck and let us know how it works out so we can add to our knowledge of XTP performance.

180gr XTP

I shoot them from a G20 and a 16? carbine.   They kill hogs!

With Hornady saying 750-1450fps, I would think the 1475 would be somewhat of a conservative number on their part. I wouldn?t think exceeding that by 1-2 hundred feet per second would make that much of a difference, but will certainly come apart at some point, it?s just when. All I know is that the XTP is an outstanding bullet.
