As for loads, I've found AA #9 to be real nice powder--I sure haven't tried everything, but of the propellants I have used, #9 seems to be very versatile.

Yes, AA9 works well in the 10mm for medium to hot loads. Great looking gun you have!

I've done a little testing with VV 3N37, and it works pretty well for medium to hot loads too but MAN, since I've done most testing indoors, that stuff is kinda "smokey"....

Congrats!  I very much like both the satin finish and the fact they've not published a short-story on the slide--it looks good and all-business. I've sure heard a lot of good things about that Ruger.

Thanks for this.  I ran across several boxes of loads yesterday marked "14.3 gr AA9", all over a real nice round-nose flat point 180 gr cast bullet, and I don't recall ever getting too excited over the accuracy with these. Duh...maybe tonight I load down about a GRAIN and see if that helps with the groups. Probably be a lot more 'casual' to shoot as well.

I apologize for bringing up this old thread but it was the first one under the 10mm autos category.  Will pick my 1st 1911 in my 72 years on the planet.  This SR1911 10mm 5" is in excellent condition with G-10 grips, 2 mags plus 2 Wilson Combat 9rds, 1 CMC 9rd and 2 metalform 8rds extra.  Been loading for the G20SF for years and do 9.0 Longshot 180gr jacketed and a max load of 9.0 LS with a 200gr X-Treme plated that is safe for my KKM barrel.  I will of course work up carefully with the new pistol.

For those of you that shoot this one, should I immediately order a Wolf or other brand 22-24# recoil spring?  Is there anything else to have on hand before shooting it as is?

I have small hands with short fat fingers and never felt like I could reach the trigger on a 1911 for a straight pull.  The Glock is too long too but I live with it.  I traded into this one on a deal I could not refuse!

I suffer from the same "too good of a deal to pass up" syndrome as well, plus if you end up not totally loving it, you will likely come out ahead if you sell it. It's a win win 😀

I would run it as is with your 180gr load. You didn't mention your COAL, but that, and quality mags are probably the two most important issues for reliability in a 1911.

It's debated by "experts" as to the effect of upping the weight of the recoil spring in 1911s. I don't claim to be an expert, but I land of the side of it slightly increases the lock time and very slightly decreases the rearward speed of the slide. It also increases the forward speed of the slide. As long as the reliability isn't changed that's more of a matter of personal taste, what feels better to you.

Before even tinkering with springs you might want to look at the Wilson Combat selection of triggers. Given what you've posted about your hand size, a shorter trigger might be right up your alley.

I don't mess with springs until I have a problem.  I do always order a flat bottom firing pin stop.

Yes another deal hard to pass up.  And having never owned a 1911 knew it would be fun to learn something new.  Probably + $250 min.

Spectacular!  Had no idea there would be a short reach trigger.  This is the kind of input I need knowing NOTHING about a 1911.  My COAL is as short as 1.244 for my 220 Rim Rocks but most jacketed rounds run 1.250-1.260.  I researched the mags that came with it and they all seem to have a good pedigree but we will see how they run.  Could not find much info on running 8 vs 9 round mags though.

Thanks for this input.  Researched how it works and now I understand it.  Mine is the series 70 with Bomar style rear sight.  Looking at all the options there are a few too many.  Would you have a couple of brands/models in mind that would work best?

So far it will not cost very much to head in the right direction so keep the ideas coming cuz once I can reach the trigger I know I will love it.

I use the Metalform mags with satisfaction. They were blems from Brownell's.

I've used all these powders less PP and all work well.  BD is my favorite, most accurate powder, but I'm using alot of LS now because I'm low on BD.

Be mindful of the COAL on the 200gr WFN.  Likely they'll need to be seated more deeply than expected for reliable feeding in the SR1911-10.

After watching some YouTube videos, was able to take my first 1911 apart.  Polished the sliding surfaces including the new short reach trigger with 2000 grit, crocus cloth and flitz.  Did not mess with sear surfaces.  Lite spritz of Hornady One Shot to remove finger prints.
Had to watch a video while putting it back together.  Trigger started out at a nice 4.25#'s with creep that always stopped short of breaking.  I now have 3.5#'s and the creep is gone, YAY!  The trigger did not have adjustments but came out super nice with .055 take up before the wall and what I think is a short reset at .065.  After the parts wear in a little more, I might put a small amount of moly on the trigger surfaces everywhere but the sears.  No spring changes done or planned as it has an 18# recoil spring and 29# mainspring not producing any problems.

Put all 7 magazines + 1 in chamber through it and only had 1 lock-back on the 5th round shooting 120 rounds.  My aging hands hurt a little less than the Glock 20 but still noticeable so hopefully the EGW flat firing pin stop that needs to be fitted and buffers for range use only will help.  Testing the extractor seems a little loose so hopefully I can take a little off the front edge of its groove when fitting the firing pin stop to tighten it up.

For the first time in 10mm I plan to produce some lighter loads like 200gr at 1000fps to make it more enjoyable.  Is Longshot good for reduced loads?  Don't have any Blue Dot but do have some CFE Pistol, BE-86, W231, 2400 and a big can of Green Dot allegedly not recommended for 10mm.  Have used the Green Dot in 9mm with good success.  Any old data out there for 10mm?  Super accurate reduced loads for 180 and 200gr bullets would be appreciated.

This has been a fun experience learning about the 1911.

Steve's Pages lists the 180gr bullet with 5.7 to 6.0 gr of Green Dot. I have used their data frequently but I try to find some verification of the loads. A few cases the max is truly MAX.
Lyman lists Red Dot with some jacketed bullets and most cast bullets. Significantly they also list Bulleye with almost all bullets .
I would feel comfortable with the 5.7 Green Dot load and a 180 gr bullet.I'd only load a few to test run first.

Thanks for weighing in and I agree doing a few 180's at 5.7 would not be scary for a target load.  Looking over all the old data for G.D. they have about everything you can imagine listed from .380 to .44 spcl but never 10mm.  They even list the .40 S&W.  And yes they use Bullseye, 700X, Unique etc.  I suspect they did not get even close to their standard of consistent velocity/accuracy in the 10mm.  Probably not dangerous just not acceptable.  I am looking for something to swing 8" steel at 25 yards and do not want to burn up my GOOD stuff with more Green Dot available than I could ever use.  Was hoping someone had tried it with good success.

I could also dip into my W231 if someone has an accurate slow moving load especially for the 200gr Montana Golds I have a big unopened box of.  I also have a lot of 2400 that I have shot at the 12.8gr-180's but its a little stiff for what I want.  It also might play well in a reduced loading like it does in .44mag.

I got my SR1911 10mm last week and I waiting on components and dies. I will be casting 175-401 TC this weekend as my mold should be here tomorrow. got 2 lbs of Autocomp set aside for loads.
I can't wait to get some loads through it and also have some 180 gr FMJ projectiles on the way. Latest LD from Hodgdon is where I start.
