One of the boys down home has a 45-70 pistol but I'm not sure who made it. It carrys a 7.5" barrel. It's a handful alright but worse, it's a major ear buster.....even with a headset on. And my headset is an old Navy Flightline headset that we used on the aircraft carriers. It's been far better than most of the gun headsets. But, a 3" barrel in this cartridge is just nutz. You get no velocity as such so anything you have gained is gone. That the accuracy of their testing yielded an average 3.5" group at 25 yds translates to minute of pickup truck tailgate at 100 yds means I'll never carry one or buy one. Far too many guns out there that have the accuracy at distance but maybe doesn't have the power for the same money. There's 2 schools of thought that I've come across in my travels. One is you can't put meat on the ground unless you put lead in the air. And I agree with it, mostly. Two, accuracy trumps power anyday. And that is biblical in my book. This new shooter is probably a one time kinda fun gun. After that, it'll probably be in a gunshop somewhere for cheap and no buyers with lack of sense to buy it. Neat to read about but you have to wonder about the folks that buy them.

Being the owner of several 30-30 pistols, you"ll get into some fairly tricky loading to get the best out of the gun. SR4759 is your friend. You'll need a real bulky fast burning powder to get the best loading density out of it. There's data out there for IMR4227 as well but finding it is another issue. Since I cleaned out a gunshop of SR4759, I haven't had to look for it so it might also be a hard find. I also load 35.0grs H335 under a 30 carbine 110gr FMJ. Accuracy is actually good enough to keep the bullets on a 6" plate at 100 yds but that's not the reason for the load. I hate public gun ranges. Invariably I end up with either a newby that thinks he has a clue or an idiot. I pack the Contender 30-30 that has a 10" barrel and with this load. Standing besides me at the line is like getting hit upside the head with a #2 washtub when the gun goes off. It doesn't take but a couple of rounds to remove the idiots. Muzzle blast is incredible as is the muzzle flash. You can light up 10 acres of flat cleared ground with it at night. The 30-30 can be a fun round to load for. Hope you end up with one. Since the round is not being kept in a tube mag, you can load spire point bullets. My plinkers are 147gr FMJ with 17.0 grs SR4759. Gets me about 1500'ps. Hunting loads for the Contender is the 125gr Sierra HP loaded with H4198 to 2100'ps. It'll put a hole in porky big enough you can follow the blood trail with a helicopter.........no, really!

Watch the slo mo at 7:10 when he shoots a shaving cream can. There's an actual ring of fire at the end of the muzzle blast. I'm a bit surprised he only has foam earplugs while shooting this gun.
