Speeds Feeds and Ballistics

For years 10MM enthusiast like myself has dreamed of the day that Speer would release it's 10MM gold dot bullet as a reloading component.

I was able to get my hands on a few and wanted to load full power 10MM with them. The 10MM factory load as shot here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXOf9... seems to be warm 40S&W loads.

I am not crazy about hot roding my reloads but we are talking 10MM here. The original recipe called for 200gr bullet at 1200fps and that's what we are trying to accomplish here today. Though the original loading proved to be to much for the 1911 pistol. With a few modifications you can prepare your 1911 to withstand such velocities.

Speer if you are watching or listening --- We want the 10MM Gold Dot as a re-loadable component.

Shot 1 = 1224
Shot 2 = 1249
Shot 3 = 1242
Shot 4 = 1232
Shot 5 = 1254
Average = 1240fps

Speer, we're waiving our money out you!  Either load your ammunition up to these type of velocities or release the 200fe projectile component for Handloaders or commercial loaders like Underwood.  PLEASE.

AWESOME!  Another Great video...   Your Velocity from the Delta Elite matched what I got in the S&W1006 (22lbs recoil spring) test 1231 and 1227 fps.
Glad to see that the round only went 17 ½", one thing some people forget is that as these bullets expand the petals open wide before they roll back to smaller expanded size.

The retained weight was also perfect from the bonded Gold Dot bullet.
It was a pleasure to share these to you and I hope Speer will eventually add these 200 Grain Gold Dots as handloading components so all of the 10mm enthusiast who roll their own.

Yeah, Mr.revolverguy is THE Man when it comes to informative vids. I've watched as some of the forum members have inquired about the 200gr Gold Dots. My normal rule of thumb is if you need a heavier bullet, get a bigger gun. But since watching this vid AND looking at reloading data at Hodgdon, it has piqued my interest. Hodgdon shows data for the Hornady 200gr FMJ bullet with max velocities at 1172'ps out of a 5" barrel. So what was shown in the vid seems achievable with prudent reloading practices. As shown it's maybe not for every firearm and maybe that's why Speer hasn't released it to the reloaders- who knows. But I can certainly see a market for it. If they were available, I'd be buying some to play with so include me in the fan club.

I'm assuming that the Delta Elite has factory springs in it and no battering of the slide was evident. I'll also assume that the brass is still reloadable and shows no signs of excessive pressure. I can see where Speer may not want a heavy bullet out there that some guns can't digest and not do damage to the gun.

Because of the chamber support in the Delta I love using it as a testing platform, almost everytime if it fires in the Colt it will fire in other 10MM chambers safely. The brass from this video does have a slight bulge to it. Though still capable of being reloaded but I trashed them, actually stepped on them and through them in the trash at home so someone else does not get them and try to reload them. As you will need a Lee Bulge Buster die to reload them.

If Speer ever gives us what we want in releasing the 200gr 10MM Gold Dot bullet to us, I would back this load down .7gr and believe I would be right at about 1190 to 1210fps.

I was amazed at the results today and still feel with lessor of a load would still see the same performance.

In my communications with Mr. Revolver Guy and info he shared about the use of the Speer 200 Grain Gold Dots in the video testing, I'll be making an adjustment to the powder charge.
While these are impressive numbers and the Clear Ballistics Gel test was PERFECT @ 17 1/2" with full expansion of the 200 grain Gold Dot!

This adjustment should be right at 1200 fps from the 5" pistols and slightly slower from shorter barrels.  But I want to stay with the BE-86 powder because of the flash suppressant properties of this powder.  It should make for a great Self Defense cartridge.

I'm sure I could work with other powders that would yield these numbers or even higher velocities.  However my goals are being met above!

based on the below, 8.2gr's of BE86 for a safer max load, what would be a good min load of BE86 to start with? I rarely load up nuclear loads, and am  really just looking for ideas on a starting point for BE86 using a 200gr HP

This was the reloaded 200 grain Gold Dots, one was the new style #54000 and the other #53866 the 40S&W contract pulled with known powder as shown.

EAA Limited Pro 4.75" 1013, 1071 Average = 1042 FPS/ 482 LBS

200gr Gold Dot #54000/#53883 7.4gr's BE-86
