In years past there was the caseless ammo which I thought would be a viable application, no one explained if the primer was blown out of the barrel/chamber as a result of the firing process.

Here is a bit of info explaining some attempts for caseless ammo concepts.

Interesting concept, it's fascinating that compacted propellant provided better burn characteristics than a noncompacted

Interesting stuff, but still not all that practical.

The only true caseless ammo that ever made it to market was the Daisy .22 V/L caseless stuff. Too fragile, not waterproof, poor accuracy, were just some of the issues.

IRRC, there was some experimenting with a liquid propellant stored and fed through the stock and a magazine of just bullets that had some limited success. Although ignition was electronic, so one would need tanks of propellant, mags of bullets, and batteries. Wish i could remember where I read about that.

Not sure we're on the same page here but the military has been using this caseless ammo for years. Look up 5.56 LSAT CTA ammo and you'll find St Marks is still loading this stuff and the weapons have already been on the field in combat in 5.56 and in 308/7.62. Here's a vid of the ammo in use at a training facility. They are claiming at St Marks that they can reduced the ammo weight by 30% using this methodology.

I only meant that telescoping ammo isn't truly "caseless." There have been others that are, they just didn't work very well. There are also other ideas that have been tested toward the same goal.

The search of lighter weight ammo cartridges we are seeing these plastic casings trying to fill the needs...

Looks like they have a number of Shortcomings, or things to iron out, at least as of the articles publication, but still a neat concept
