Morning Folks, what gun lube are you finding to be best

Bunny

Man I try so many... my current favorites are (in no order) FP10, TW-25, One-shot, XF-7.  I am kind of bad about buying whatever the latest and supposedly greatest is.  I would be interested in hearing others viewpoints.  Good thread Kenk.

Thanks, I currently use Hops #9 or Gun Scrubbe for solvent but was hoping for exceptional lube Ideas

Tetra grease on rails and the outside of barrels, especially on 1911s. A little goes a very long way. CLP on other areas that require easier penetration, like barrel links. I have a couple of high round count (over 10,000rnds) alloy frame 1911s that I firmly believe the Tetra grease has kept in great shape. Better than anything I've used in the past.

Only 1 caveat. Don't over do it with the Tetra grease, especially in very cold weather. To much will slow down slide speed until the gun heats up a little. The correct amount, very light coating, will be fine in the cold.

Years ago I stumbled on this article.

http://www.grantcunningham.com/2006/05/lubrication-101/

At the time I was using Mobile 1 mixed with Dexron ATF for oil and a tube of white lithium marine grade grease for grease.  The article really didn't tell me anything to make me change my ways.  And, for a couple of bucks at walmart I have a half gallon of oil and 14 oz of grease.

I keep the oil in empty saline solution bottles.  The wife and I both wear contacts so we create an empty about 3-4 times a year.  The bottle has a nice drop dispenser.  I also often use a small craft paint brush to just brush a light coat on all the places I want it.

About two years ago I got in on a special run of Slipstream Styx at a discount price on another forum I frequent.  I have been impressed with the product, though in all honesty, I don't know that I think it is enough better to justify.  It was literally 20X more expensive.

The biggest take away for me from the article above is that guns lubrication requirements are not unique enough to merit their own special lubricants.

0w-20 Mobile 1

left over from an oil change usu gives me 5 ozs...  enough for a lifetime as only about 2-3 drops are used each time

I would agree that most gun lubrication requirements are probably met or exceeded with synthetic engine oils. Same with marine grease. One of the reasons I like the Tetra grease is that it was designed for guns and it doesn't gum up with powder residue. It also cleans off fairly easily, both guns and clothing. Won't ruin your dry cleanables.

Thanks, how does Tetra grease do in extreme cold?

Graybeard

It's fine as long as you don't over apply it. The directions actually say wipe on a thin layer and buff it off with a clean cloth or patch. Seems counterintuitive to greasing anything else with petroleum grease, but it works.

I have used many and none of them have been bad.

Right now I am using Tetra Grease for rails and such but I also have been trying the Lucas Extreme gun oil and it is doing everything I want it to do.
As a plus Lucas is a big sponsor of the shooting sports!
