Just thought I'd share with the crew here that I managed to take my first deer with a 10mm on Sunday. It is the first non wounded deer I have taken with a handgun period. It's only a doe but it is a trophy to me.

Very nice.  Enjoy the venison.

One thing that surprised me was the amount of hair pulled into the wound track. Never seen that with rifle killed deer. I guess the hollow point of the 180XTP just grabbed a bunch of hair and drug it along as it penetrated. There was hair almost the entire wound track. I should have taken better pictures. Next time.

Spitzer bullets tend to pierce skin like a needle and then push it to the sides.  The XTP with the big hollow point will paper punch a circle of skin and hair and then carry it along.

Congratulations, I have been carrying my G40 10mm with me in hopes of getting a deer in range. I am shooting 200gr xtp. I wouldn't like to see a handgun hunting thread on here that discusses what type firearm and bullet was used. How far away was she?  Again nice job.

Congratulations! Any game animal with a handgun is  trophy and you'll have plenty of good meat to eat this winter.

Was this Underwood Ammo ?
My loads. 180 XTP, Starline brass, 10.3 gr bluedot.

10.3gr of Blue Dot is pretty light. My favorite load that shoots best in my G20 is 11.2gr with a 180XTP and WLP primer. Chonographs at 1233fps from my 29 and 1294fps from my 20

Without judgement, I just want to comment that 11.0 grains of Blue Dot is a max load for a 180 grain JHP>

I would like to shoot a deer such as that. John Taffin's "formula" is becoming increasingly hard to duplicate these days, because no one is manufacturing a 170-grain JHP as of late.

I'll "beat a dead horse" once again, by quoting John Taffin's old 1991 recipe: "A warm load consisting of 13 grains of Accurate Arms #7 behind a Nosler 170-grain JHP yielding 1374 fps from a 7" slide/barrel IAI Javalina". This load should generate 1324 fps from a 5" barreled 1911 Dan Wesson Razoback, and about 1315 fps from a Glock Model 20.

This handload deserves reproduction and range testing to determine if this isn't a great product to be used for harvesting many types of medium-sized game.

I agree, these are not nuclear loads but they clock 1206fps average for 10 shots. I figured this was enough horsepower for the small Missouri whitetail I took with it.

Congratulations on the harvest and the effectiveness of your
