Hello
Just joined in on the 10mm fun.. Picked up a Glock 20SF two weeks ago.

I have seen references on various forums to 'older' Winchester 175gr Silvertip ammo. Does this mean that this ammo was hotter at some point in the past?

I just got some yesterday and am looking forward to chronographing a few.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Others with more data will chime in, but the Silvertip has always been reported to be a pretty consistent performer to my recollection.

I have seen chrono results in the not to distant past that were lacking quite a bit compared to advertised velocity.  In the further past that didn't seem to be the case.  I definitely look forward to seeing your results!
Gun Control?  Oh yes, the theory that becoming a victim is somehow morally superior to defending yourself & your family.  Makes perfect sense.

Hi
Got to do some shootin finally..
I looked at some Win 175's..  This forum engine is different from some others I frequent in that I don't know how to post pictures here so I'll just give links.  Is there a tutorial that spell out how this is done?

Stock Glock 20SF right out of the box.. Only got 1200~ fps with the Silvertip ammo with my gun.
Here are some range work pics.

I dont understand where/how those flyers are coming from. Its always the first round. Is that common with Glocks?

Anyway gotta load up some more stuff to test..

So you took apart the Factory Silver Tip and found 9.3 grains of power inside, very interestimg... 8)

I did some research and found some data where Winchester (15th Edition
Reloader's Manual, 1997 Winchester Group, Olin Corporation, East Alton, IL 62024) that was showing some dat using 540 powder that fits the data shown by your pull down.

I believe 540 and HS-6 are the same powder....Or at least were.

This data seems to line up with HS-6 data at least for the few common bullets Hodgdon has with this list.

Was the COAL 1.260" with the Blue Dot? Just curious as the velocities were in line with what I loaded using XTPs and WLP primers.

RDub01

Hey Shadow-  Yes, thats interesting. I still have some 540 and 571.  Both these powders look identical to each other. But the stuff that was in the ST rounds was definately an Olin ball powder but it was a little different looking.
I'll bet it's something close though.  Commercial ammo makers don't generally use canister grade propelants in their ammo. They usually have their own formulation not available to the public.  I don't have any Silvertips to load or I would load up some with 9.3grs of 540 and see. But I could load up some 180gr.. I'll bet, that I would get something slower than what the data says.  That is usually the case with Win data.

EdMc- Yes COAL was 1.26"..  I was surprised that 11.1grs couldn't get me to 1200 fps.. I cannot find any loading data that lists a max load of BD over 11.0grs. Yet the miked brass says I could go to 11.4grs. I will try that next time.

I too have always heard that HS-6 and 540 were the same powder.  Probably what happens is, slower lots end up in one, and faster lots wind up in the other.

Yeah, Speer's latest manual shows 1297 fps from 11.0 gr of BD using 180 Gold Dots, CCI 300 primers and a COAL of 1.250". Hornady's was over 1200 with 10.7, a 180 XTP, WLP and COAL of 1.260. I never got close with the Hornady load, even in a 5 inch barrel. Recently purchased some GDs and loaded them per the Speer data, I'll try them tomorrow if I can. Should be faster with the shorter OAL and the GD being a longer bullet.

Glocks can take some getting used to if you are used to shooting other platforms. I was trained on a P7M8, so the transition wasn't as difficult for me.

Though if I am not careful, I have point of impact issues when I switch from my Glocks to my 1911's. Sometimes it takes a few mags before my groups get back to center target.

I did try the Speer max load today. Starline, 11.0 gr BD, 180 Gold Dot, CCI 300 and COAL of 1.250". Standard G20SF..........avg 1138 fps over five shots. Once again nowhere near the Blue Dot 'book' velocity. Fwiw, the lot number on the BD I bought is 312X032012. Velocity is 46 fps over my (1092) max Hornady load of 10.7..........about the same as the difference in Speer and Hornady's tested velocities @ their max loads. (1295 & 1250) I think it's the powder as I duplicated the Hornady velocities using their Power Pistol load.

The lot # on my BD can is;  CE0519 Lot 284 shift 2.  A swing shifter.. that explains it. :D

Swing, graveyard or vacation shift, I'm through wasting my time with it. ;)

Well ok... This is my first Glock, but since this was a 'test' I was paying particular attention to fundamentals and making every shot count.  I'll just have to pay attention and see what I'm doing.  Thanks

Never seen anything about it with Glocks but have seen it mentioned with other brands. Many say it's caused by the different slide speed between loading a round manually and during firing. Pull back the slide and release and don't use the slide release increases slide speed. Internet BS or truth? Don't ask me, I'm one of the worse pistol shots in the Western world.  :D I've noticed I miss left a lot on my first shot but just figured I wasn't concentrating since I can do the same on any of them.
