This article makes it clear that the load wasn't "watered down" after testing and adoption, but before.   It is a good read, and is factually and historically accurate.

Sorry gents, most cra,ahh junk written by the fbi is mostly not true. Most facklers true stuff has been copied by him and the fbi from 2 famous members of the NYPD who spent many years proving all they say is true while the fbi copies and changes to try making themselves look good, such as wound balistics, caliber shootings, gelatin test and almost everything.
You will note in true govt fashion they try to make all shoes one size to fit all, same with calibers of guns and velocity but more importantly wound and killing balistics, oh, we can't discuss killing openly we'll disguise it.
While govt agents were being killed by bad guys, bad guys were being killed by ferocous members of NYPD using guns and ammo fbi sez don't work.
Same with point shooting, if you read and study you will find out it works better almost than aiming.
Every single shooting written about calibers, bullets, wounds, etc are taken from real life shootings from living people shot and recovered, dead mostly, etc. The 2 police officers traveled all over the USA examining wounds, first hand discussions with shooters and those who were shoot and still alive, they covered everything possible, not like govt accountability or worrying what their superiors would say.
Even back then the govt went out of its way to prove the 1911 was no good, its still attempting to do it now, almost 100years later, the 1911 is no good.
The police were not worried about offending anyone, just the truth to save lives.
In the late 20's, early 30's, cops were using guns that were no good, used up, politicians then like now we don't want you to shoot anyone, we don't want to buy you guns or ammo, don't shoot, walk away, cops were using partially broken 38 caliber revolvers, the bad guys were using 9 mm semi auto pistols, soon that changed, the 9's were kept and cops started carrying service revolvers in 38 special and 9mm courtesy of the other folks. I could go on.

Ballistically accurate or not, the information is worthwhile as it documents the history of our favorite round.  It is a good factual representation of what occurred.

Wut?

I thought it was a fairly accurate historical account of the development and testing process behind the 10mm Auto; not sure where government accountability was mentioned in there... ???

Captain O

Let us face facts:

When all is said and done, (more is usually said than done). The 180-grain 1300 fps 10mm Auto load defeated the barriers, and stopped the bad guys more efficiently than either the 9mm Luger or the .45 ACP. Then the political powers within the governmental structure had to pander to the "pencil pushers" that can't shoot an effective handgun. These are the same people that couldn't qualify with a shotgun or sumachinegun if their lives depended upon the outcome; "watering down" the load so that the Caper Milquetoasts within the Bureau could qualify seemed to be the only solution the 'politically correct" bosses could stomach, so the .40 S&W was born.

End of story.
