Another installment in the thrilling saga of service rifle FMJ penetration. In this episode, we will look at M80 ball fired from a 22" barreled Springfield M1A versus M855 ball fired from a 16" barreled AR pattern rifle, both against a 10" diameter cured pine log. You know the drill. Place yer bets.





BTW, I finally got my tuition reimbursement money so I can afford to buy some new gelatin. Should be able to get back into gelatin testing in a few weeks.

I don't know about the M1A, but I have compared a 223 Colt 20" HBAR to a 308 HK91, and there wasn't any difference at close range.

Basically what I expected. The M1A had a 22" barrel, so it penetrated more than the 16" barreled M4. At 200+ yards I bet the results would favor the M1A.

I have shot soft steel and aluminum plates, and at close range the 308 and 223 penetrate roughly the same amount.


I noticed that you got a "click" with the first round in the M1A. Here is some interesting info on the M14/M1A.

Yeah, it was a light primer strike. If you listen closely, you can hear me mutter about M14 reliability. That article hurt a lot of feelings.
