VERY new to this forum. Looking forward to receiving a 1911 in 10mm built by my 'smith. He has
warned against using the hotter loads, and strongly urged me to install a Shok Buff (sp?).
I'm also intrigued by the Sig P220 in 10mm/all stainless. How hot a load do the 1911
owners run in your 10mm's (Is DW stronger than Kimber?) Is anyone knowledgeable
enough to say if Sig's new 10's would be a stronger platform than 1911's or not,(or about
the same)?  Thanks for all input!!

The new Sig is a tank of a gun! By design it should hold up longer with anything you throw at it. It doesn't matter what 1911... basically all the same. Shock buffs have pretty much proven to suck for anything you are depending on in a pinch.

Yeah...Friends don't let friends run a shok-buf.

If you want to tame the 10mm in a 1911 there are two simple things to do.  First, install a flat bottom firing pin stop, and second install a 25 lb mainspring, also called a hammer spring.  Both of these eat up a bunch of slide velocity without increasing slide speed on it's way back into battery.

Finally, unless you smith skimped on the frame, it will hold up fine.  The colt frames that cracked did so in a non-critical area, and were to to a corner that acted as a focal point.  Colt fixed the issue by removing metal from the frame, thus eliminating the focal point.  Your frame is plenty strong.

The only concern is when using ammo that is right at the ragged edge of 10mm max pressures.  It is more of a concern in un-ramped colt barrels, but I would expect a custom build to have a fully supported chamber.  That would probably make this a non-issue.

Thanks so much, sqlbullet !
I'm still waiting for delivery, so I don't have a tactile frame of reference yet.
What poundage recoil springs should I be considering?
God bless you much !

I run an 18.5.  Some (many?) guys run more like a 22, and I used to as well.  But I find the gun runs great with an 18.5 recoil, 25 main and a flat bottom stop.
