Earlier this week, Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) revealed a prototype assault rifle designed for the Canadian Armed Forces. According to a press release from the DRDC, the new firearm boasts "more firepower, improved accuracy, and smart-integrated accessories" that will allow the gun to automatically detect and assist in engaging targets.

"In the medium term, this weapon concept represents a lethal, flexible general-purpose platform," said Lieutenant-Colonel Serge Lapointe of the Canadian Army. "It will be able to operate in all theatres of operations in the most complex terrain including urban areas, mountains, jungles, deserts and the Arctic."

The DRDC is remaining silent on many details of its new futuristic-looking rifle, but added that the firearm will be able to support a three-round 40mm grenade launcher and 12 gauge shotgun attachment, all the while weighing less than a Colt Canada C7 (an AR-15 variant) loaded with the same accessories.

Officials are still conducting testing on the prototype, which is done in part by Human Systems Inc., as well as Canadian soldiers under the supervision of DRDC scientists.
