Hey guys the brown truck brought me a care package from midway.

I got a hogue monogrip and some k10 mags.

I just finished fitting the new grip to my steel full size witness and now the mags are very hard to lock home and will not drop free.

Anyone have suggestions on the best way to remedy this problem?

I suppose I could take the grips back off and file them for clearance but I am not sure where to remove material and also I had a heck of a time fitting the grip on in the first place and really don't want to go through that again if I can avoid it.

So I guess the best questions I have are:

1 is there a trick for fixing the grip to mag fit without removing the grip?
2 what is the best way to find and mark the area(s) that need to be shaved before I take it apart?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Pull the magazine out and look in there with a flashlight. You will want to hit the pads that basically hold it to the frame (in the openings). You can file or sand them down... trial fits. That means it has to come off and you will get the hang of it  ;D

If you take too much off they might mover around. My guess is about 1/16" or so.

Thanks for the reply Intercooler.

I have spend the last half hour looking and poking at it and think I have found the part causing the drag. As you suggested the molded plastic is not lining up right with the back edge of the frame towards the top. I will break out a file and see what I can make happen. I will post again with the results.

I will say that I love how this grip feels compared to the stock plastic.

After an hour of cutting and filing mostly success. with the slide off of the frame I can easily seat and drop mags both empty and full. With the gun assembled it takes some more effort to lock in a full (14rds) mag and it binds up and does not drop free. 13 or less rds in the mag and it is easy peasy to lock or drop. For now I am ready to hit the range and see how it does. At this point I think the worst case is I may not be able to top off but I think I am ok with that.

With a little luck and a break in the rain I will be able to post a range report this weekend  ;D

I'm hoping to go too if the rain stops. My old Match with the Hogue finger grip still has to be the best feel to the hand I ever had.

I don't know what the upper level tanfoglios feel like in stock trim but I would agree that the rubber monogrip is a huge improvement over the stock plastic grips on the basic model.

I will admit that I am biased towards pistols that have finger grooves on the front strap. the only one I own that does not have them is my cz52.

The Hogue setup IMO is better than the checkering on the upper end pieces where you can't put that grip on.
