This Old, Ugly Gun That I Love

This is from an article that I got published on a minor blog.

QuoteMy uncle gave me this old, ugly gun. It's a.44 mag single action revolver. It's beat up. The finish is worn. The plastic grips are shattered and held together with electrical tape. It is truly hideous but I love it.

The revolver was made by Herter's back during the cold war in "Western Germany". Presumably, they wanted to make West Germany sound a little more cowboyish (that's a word now). The right side of the barrel is stamped "Herter's Single Six". It appears that they made a whole pile of them and then realized that they wouldn't be able to sell them in the US with a blatant trademark infringement stamped right on the barrel so they struck out the "Six".

The rest is here if you're interested.

Please give me some criticism. I'd like to continue writing so I need to know what I can improve.

Very cool old gun!

When I sent you the cast bullets (various calibers) a while back, I think I sent a few of the Lyman 44 Devastator HP with gas checks (5 maybe)? ???  Do you recall if I send them to you?  I don't recall seeing those tested.

they would have looked like these in the top row...

Interesting that the barrel is marked ".44 Calibre".

I've got an old Herter's .401 powermag made by J.P. sauer & son. It's a fairly stout single action. Had cheap plastic grips and what is call a "Ruger" blue but the thing that stands out about it is the ugly hammer. It works beautifully!! You can cock without moving hand position. These are great guns that can still be found for a bargain.

I believe you did. I don't have .44 dies yet but I might be able to borrow a set. Those would be bad ass.

Yea that's cool Andrew.  8)  If you need I'll send some loaded to test with.

That might happen sooner than me:

A. Borrowing the dies.

2. Buying powder and primers (almost out of LP)

III. Finding time to load and shoot.

If it's not too much trouble, and if you have some mild to medium loads handy, sure send some along. I don't want to shoot anything near the upper end of SAAMI from this gun, though.

What I have loaded and tested by Myself and Intercooler are these;
Dupont IMR 4227 (1979) 22.4 grains CCI 350 Lyman 255gr Devastator HP gas check Loaded in Star Line 44 Magnum Brass

Tested by Intercooler  Ruger Redhawk 7.5" barrel 255gr Cast 22.4gr IMR4227 @ 1246, 1262, 1260, 1250, 1301, 1270.
Average = 1264.83 FPS/ 905 LBS

I don't have any unloaded brass at the moment...I have seen higher charge weights than what I am using.

If you want some of these I can send them...
