Oh My!  Imagine the surprise for David and myself as I retrieved the bullet from the puller, it was long, too long for a 180 grain and then confirmed as it was placed on the scale... :o  These Underwood Delta Elite cartridges were actually loaded with 200 grain JHP Nosler bullets! :-[

Quality control issue or did they not have 180's and substituted the 200's thinking the customer would never know? ???

I think David was going to call UW.  The other thing, is I don't think they would make even 1200 fps much less the 1240 number at that loading.

Your 200 Gold Dots were loaded with IMR800X 8.4 grains and you got 1166 fps in your test...

What do you think the likely velocity was with the 8.8 gr of 800X?  I was worried the heavy bullet could have caused problems with pressure.. But the brass looked fine.   Yeah I'm kind of mad.  When you make a mistake in a load it could go either way.. Lucky for me, nothing bad happened.  Suppose they go the bullet right but screwed up tthe charge??  Or got the charge right but used the wrong powder?  That could have been a bad day for me.

My first UW purchase too.  Im wondering if the high demand for ammo is pushing the employees to exhaustion resulting in errors like this.

If they ran out of 180 grain bullets and used 200 gr bullets thinking no one would care, or notice, as Intercooler mentions,  I'll still be disappointed.   I paid for premium ammo.   I don't think I ended up with that.  I hope they can figure out a way to make this right.

Based on previous testing, the Underwood DE load we pulled using IMR800X 8.8 gr loading under the 200 Nosler would likely be 1180-1200 fps and still a very safe loading for the Delta Elite guns.

BTW, it was I (The Shadow)that mentioned...

I spoke with Mr. Underwood this morning and it appears I was sent product 247 (200 gr Nosler JHP) which is estimated at 1250fps / 694ft-lbs.  These particular loads were packaged in the Delta Elite boxes (product no. 240) by accident.  So what I thought were mild shooting DE loads were actually full charge 200 grainers.  Haha!..

For my trouble,  Underwood gave me a gift certificate to use on a future order.  I'm fine with that.  I was glad he called to figure out what went wrong.  He seemed very concerned and was going to make sure that the mispackaging didn't happen again.  He's a nice guy and his sales person, Ms Brooke Hancock, is very professional as well.   I'll buy from them again.

What is going on over there?

Are they that busy? Or did they cut back on their work force?

It is my opinion that the 200gr Nosler Delta Elite Loaded cartridges were placed in the 180gr Delta Elite box.  The 180 grain and 200 grain Nosler bullets only differ in length.  Therefore looking at the loaded cartridges they would look exactly the same.  To me this makes the most sense because of the fact that the Item #247 is rated at 1250 fps and I know from personal experience it takes 9.4 grains of IMR800X to achieve 1250 fps.

Also Item #247 has the Warning: Cannot be used in Colt Delta Elite or any other firearms with rampless barrel due to complete lack of case support.
Safe for use in all 10mm firearms with a ramped feed barrel.
(Examples: Glock, EA Witness)

I would go as far as to say that Underwood uses the same 8.8 grain loading for both the 180gr & 200gr bullets for the Delta Elite Loads... ::)

This is in no way meant to be a bad mouthing or black eye against Mr. Underwood, I remain totally bias and document the facts as I find them.  In this particular incident, I think it was just as simple as someone slipping the loaded cartridge tray into the box labeled 180 grain Delta Elite.  One thing it does show is just how fast and easy things can go astray even with someone who is focused on their task.

Length of the Nosler 200 grain 0.6800"
Length of the Nosler 180 grain 0.6170"
so that is a difference of   0.063"

Believe it or not, as I handled the bullet as pulled, I could feel that this was heavier & longer than a 180 grain.

Or they mistakenly loaded the 200 grain Nosler bullets in place of the 180 grain Nosler bullets for the Delta Elite load.

I don't see that they offer a 200 grain Delta Elite load?

It was a box labeling issue from what I gathered. Maybe they need to switch to color coded boxes  ;D
