I contacted EAA and they claim shipments of new compact 10mm's have been in the distributor hands for about 2 or 3 weeks now, and to have my dealer get one from them. They suggested Bill Hicks & Co. or Davidson's, RSR or Acusport. I'm leary about calling them to ask them which slide is on those, in fear of the "Pelosi Factor", which you'll recognize as "you'll need to have your dealer order one to find out." So anyway, do you folks have recommendations on converting existing .40 cal compact handguns to 10mm? I've seen where the Mauser M2 can be easily done and the mags will work, but what about the others out there. I used to have a Beretta Cougar .40, which is now the Stoeger, and it's pretty solid. There's got to be others out there?? I was looking for a compact steel Jericho in .40, but all I could find in a compact is poly.

Some .40cal Pistols are built on a Small Frame and will not handle / accommodate the 10mm Round / Magazine
Also, not all .40cals are built stout enough the handle the pressures of the 10mm
It's not just a matter of re-Chambering a .40cal into a10mm

The problem with the Mauser is no one wants to ream the barre because it's two prts and the chamber is Vanadium Steel and it destroys the reamers.

What did it take to convert the Chief?

Have the barrel reamed, drill out and deburr the spot welds in the mag that hold the spacer in for the forty cal cartridge and add a heavy recoil spring.

Both of the conversions I have were done by others before me and thats where I got the idea and information.

Cool. So how does it does it shoot? You running the weaker ammo through it or will it handle full loads, like Underwood? You have a write-up anywhere?

I have my eye trained on a nice looking CS40. Still on the fence about it. So many projects.... I still haven't finished the S&W 1000 series trigger take up mod (well I have, I just haven't produced any of them yet)! Between firearms and my Corvette restoration project (er, time and money pit), and panic calls to repair computers...like right now, I'm running out of personal time. That along with a wife and a really needy for attention Maltese (he's too damned cute to ignore and loves the crap out of me), it looks like the reasonable thing to do is quit the computer income work and get Obama to keep me in the tax payer supported loop! Yeah, baby! So, who else hates me now?

I have a CS40 in the works and sent a email to Van @ The Gunworks to see if he will ream the chamber for 10mm. I just need to find a recoil spring, but thought about one from an EAA compact model from Wolff. They have a "calibration pack" that include the 18, 20, & 22 lbs springs. I'll wait until the gun is in hand to compare the stock spring diameter first. Have you found that 'perfect' spring for yours? I imagine it will cycle just fine with the stock spring when using the dumbed down 10mm ammo out there, such as Armscor. Will also need to drill out the rivets on the mags. I'm looking forward to this!

DenStinett covered the basic pretty well.

1. Does the action and magazine accomodate a cartridge 1.270" long?

2.  Are there any concerns regarding the strength of the platform.  This is not an issue of pressure.  The difference in pressure between the two is very low.  But, the recoil impulse is 50% more in 10mm.  We are looking at slide strength, frame strength, etc.

The Beretta is a good example of issues in both areas.  The guns that I am aware of that have been converted were Brigadier models.  These guns are a bunch beefier than a 92 all around.  Still, as I recall, you have to modify the mag well, and ream to make this work.  Converting a cougar or 92/96 would likely result pretty quickly in a cool two piece slide.
