Lever Gun for general purpose

Been thinking about getting a new lever gun for small game to maybe deer sized animals. Wish some of the big manufactures would come out with 10mm lever gun too. that would be a no brainer purchase. Anyway .17 seems bit small for deer sized game but maybe something along the lines of 22 hornet or 223. Something accurate works for small game but could take a deer if need be. would be nice if it could hold at least 10 rounds.

Henry Repeating Arms Makes some nice stuff

Henry does make some great stuff, but don't over look the Browning BLR. The two are very similar in design. Ive never used the Henry but I had a BLR 308 for a few years. I have never hunted small game with a rifle with such calibers as the 22 Hornet or 223. Here in MN an expanding type bullet is required for hunting and I would think that type of bullet in those calibers would destroy any small game animal if you were intending to harvest the animal for consumption. I do have a Marlin 1894 CS in 357 Mag that is an amazing rifle. Although I think this caliber too would leave any small game unusable it would be a good deer rifle "if need be". I have never hunted small game with a 357 Mag either, so I dont know for sure.  POF does make a 9mm Lever action, but starting at $1962 Im not sure I would go that route.

POF Makes some interesting weapons, but gosh, pretty high dollar stuff

How small is the quarry in your "small game" category? I adore my Rossi Model 92 chambered in .357 S&W Magnum. This can be loaded with Buffalo Bore's 180-grain long flat-nosed, gas check cast bullet ammunition yielding about 1330 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle.

For the small game you can shoot 130-grain FMJ (military ball) ammunition in .38 S&W Special and not tear the daylights out of the little critters, (but they'll be just as dead). There is a lot of lower-cost 158-grain lead ammunition that will work just as well. Accurate, dependable, and low recoil. It will kill small game and leave nothing but a hole.

If you really want a light load, you can shoot either the .38 Long Colt or .38 Short Colt in the carbine. Both will fit in the rifle and the Short Colt is akin to using a .22 Short in a .22 Long Rifle, or a .32 S&W in a revolver chambered for the .32 H&R Magnum or the .327 Federal Magnum.

Winchester loads both. The Short Colt will dispatch garden pests without alarming the entire countryside.

This is just my 2 cents worth.

Kenk, Yes those are really high dollar guns. Ive never owned a Henry or a Browning but have always heard good things about them. Lever guns have always been Winchester or Marlins.
Gunfan,  small game were talking about is Ptarmigan/ Grouse, squirrel, beaver or rabbit type animals for cook pot. My current "everything gun" is a Old Savage model 24 with a Vortex strike eagle illuminated 1x8 scope. Its a single shot over under rifle shotgun combo. 222 Remington on top and 20 gauge mag on bottom. The 222 is crazy accurate rifle. I use the vortex so i can run it on 1X for shooting shotgun the dial up for shooting the rifle. Cant imagine all the game its taken including few deer here and there. Im looking for something that holds more than just single shot in lever action. Im leaning towards 357 magnum so i can shoot light 38 special too.  I may end up just sticking with my trusty Savage 24. Having the 20 gauge with shot or slugs plus the 222 is great combo but really want more capacity. Ive got a WIN model 94 in 22LR and its great gun but thinking of going to 22 WMR or .17 HMR but think something like the 218 Bee would be great. I guess i could find someone to build one but it would be $$$. That or Just get someone follow me around and "Caddy" for me like in golfing. Hand me whatever i needed from the bag depending on the game. LOL.

I have had several lever actions in several different rifle calibers. I wanted one in a handgun caliber and since my favorite revolver caliber is .41magnum I started looking for one. It took me 5 years but I finally found a Henry in .41mag and it is a beautiful gun that shoots as good as it looks. I have yet to take a whitetail with it but have dispatched several large feral hogs here in Texas.

Henry makes some beautiful weapons

Thank for the input guys. Im thinking ill go with a Henry. 357 Mag/ 38 special or 22 WMR. I already have a Winchester 94 in 22 LR so leaning towards the 357 mag or maybe 44 Mag. thinking 357/ 38 would be way to go. 38 special would be like shooting something like a squirrel about like shooting one with a 36 cal muzzle loader and 357 Mag could handle a deer. I have a Casull and a 44 mag revolvers  so 45 long colt and 44 Mag would be nice except think they would be too much for small game. So having never owned a Henry what Model do you guys think is better? tube fed or side gate? I dont really know the differences pros and cons between the different models. Basically im practical and like smooth action, reliability and accuracy. My requirements would be it holds at least 10 rounds. Im not crazy about the bling of a golden boy in silver or gold because i hunt and not a cowgirl show shooter. However if the Golden boy models are better then i could live with it maybe. I like wood and bluing for appearance or all weather guns for practicality even though im not a plastic stock fan. So what Model(s) Henry have proven to be better for actual hunting and woods?

All the new Henrys seem to be side gates, but still have the removable magazine tube for easy unloading. I have an older .44mag Big Boy Steel, so no brass and tubular magazine only. Mine is very accurate and a perfect 100yd deer gun.

I think if they make an all steel version in .357, that would be perfect for your needs. A .38 special non expanding bullet shouldn't rough up smaller game too much and I agree with you that the .357 would be fine for deer at 100yds or less.

I almost bought a Rossi, but prefer the half cock safety system on the Henry over the cross bolt safety on the Rossi. I grew up deer hunting with a Winchester 94, so the only difference is the Henry is side eject. Marlin 336 owners would have no learning curve at all.

Thanks Graybeard I value your opinion. I'm thinking either the all weather or case hardened models. I agree that something like a cast coated 38 for small game should work well enough. I like the Idea of having same caliber in handgun and carbine but it just isnt an option for a 10mm lever unless i had one made. $$$  I read a few threads here about the High point 10mm semi auto but also heard that it wasn't the most accurate rifle and that's important to me. 357/38 seems to be the sweet spot for what I'm looking for and its purpose. I could just keep using my savage 24 but for whatever reason I'm just itching for a new lever gun. Ive no experience with Rossi or Taylors etc.  yes like you im a half cock fan too in lever guns. when i was little I grew up carrying a 94 22 Lr on traplines or following around my mom n dad. Mom gave me the 94 when i was 10 and Dad gave me a 870 wingmaster when i turned 12.

Looks like its going to be the Henry big boy all weather in 357 mag / 38 special for new lever gun. Woohoo. really debated between the 357 / 38 and the 44 mag / special. I dont own a 357 handgun but do have a 44 mag and thought it might be nice to have something that worked in both revolver and rifle.

Huntchick

So I actually looked at all weather yesterday in 357 mag. Went back today during my lunch time to get it. It was sold and no more in stock. So now I?m going to either go back tomorrow and get a Henry in 44 mag or track down another 357. Disappointed it was sold but maybe I was meant to get a 44 ? I know another place some what locally that has the 357 in stock. Now I?m trying to decide if the 44 mag/44 special would serve my needs better or not than the 357 mag / 38 special. Going to sleep on it tonight.
